What's people's views on being an Airline Pilot?

The profession is constantly rated as one of the highest paid jobs, you get to see the world, you get respect and admiration and get to rock a badass uniform.

Seriously though, has no one on here ever given it any thought as a path to go down?

Saw a NYT article today about airline pilot shortages. It was saying that there's not enough pilots right now to keep up with rising demand, and that the main reason people don't become pilots anymore is shit pay in the early years combined with the enormous cost of flight school (~$125,000 for like a $20,000/yr pay in the first few years). Makes sense, but one thing that strikes me is that the military is also complaining about shortages, where training costs aren't a consideration to potential pilots.

So going through the military, they train you and then you rack up a bunch of hours and enter the job market ahead, which you would think addresses the issue, yet there's still a shortage in the military. So what's going on here?
