They're gradually becoming more transparent about fees, and most importantly expense ratios, mentioning them in TV commercials. It's always been a corrupt industry full of kickbacks and conflicts of interest, and my opinion is that 99% of them add no value other than a mouth to feed, but the margins are coming down. The trouble is I think passive index investing is now itself a bubble and the market is toppy, so I'd hate to give "advice" to lose the advisor, no matter how great their hair is, and buy the exact same thing for 5% of the cost only to have the market reverse. Not going to tell them to buy gold and crypto like I'm doing cuz I have no idea how long the music will keep playing.
