You are free to buy a stake in the net, anon. Anyone is. Just like with BTC, anyone is free to buy the gear. For AVAX you don't even need the gear, just 2k tokens and a decent VPS.
No KYC required. No bank license. No election or delegation required, no chance selection to actually validate. 2k tokens and you WILL validate the network.

And the current 500 isn't all that bad. Cosmos for example has a way bigger mcap in diluted form and has only about 100 real validators.

The only networks with actual decentralisation currently are BTC (1mil unique miners in 2018) and ETH (around 300,000 unique miners, see https://media.consensys.net/are-miners-centralized-a-look-into-mining-pools-b594425411dc))

AVAX can easily go up to those numbers and MAINTAIN its speed. Again, ALL OF THEM ACTUALLY VALIDATING. No dPOS equivalent shit. It's just a matter of time.
