I dunno if I could write up my hacky workflow would be helpful at all, but rather key was seeing where the first distorted pixels were at the edge of the twirl effect. Luckily these overlapped nicely with the three corner markers.

This allowed me to figure out that the twirl effect was slightly off center and larger than the code itself, and position the counter-twirl relatively accurately, give or take a few pixels.
