The Japanese are closer to the pre-Manchu Chinese, but they also originate from Ancient Chinese (Yayoi) mixing with a proto-mongoloid ethnic group (Jomon). The Jomon were essentially lower-IQ barbarians, but as hunter-gatherers, they had a culture similar to Native American tribes. Agriculture brings with it much more rigid social roles and systems w/ centralized authority, while hunter-gatherers have freer and looser social roles with a nomadic spirit. Essentially, the Japanese are more "free-spirited" than the Chinese ever were since prehistory.

Shinto comes from ancient beliefs passed by word of mouth and as such it is distinctly Jomon. It's characterized by the wills of individual spirits embodying themselves in everyday life and expressing their unique character or essence. Japanese "Bushido" differs from Confucianism because it's focused on maintaining individual, spiritual honor (from within) rather maintaining social honor to keep the peace ("social morality") from obligation.

Japanese honor and shame is felt on an individual basis, whereas Chinese honor and shame are obligatory but not individually experienced. As a result, the Chinese are more "cold" and "robotic," while the Japanese are more "present" and "responsive."
