50 years ago, America's inner cities were largely black. Property values were in the toilet; with the difficulties in keeping a steady income and the lack of care from municipalities in terms of infrastructure, it made no sense to try to own your home. So most city-dwellers rented, or in the uncommon case of being able to afford it, moved to the suburbs. But the structure of a city is fundamentally valuable. The few who recognized this, would have had to fight tooth and nail to keep their property over the years. Scams of every kind - not the least of which being the slow grind nature of progress - sought to take from these property owners that which was in their name. Even the structure of society did not want them to hold on. The few who did saw their brownstones and townhouses explode from 5-figure to 8- or 9-figure valuations in the past 10 years. Few made it - many straight-up died waiting - but for their progeny, there was to be found either a small fortune or prime access to growing, vibrant neighborhoods that past generations never could have seen in those old rowhomes.
