RobinHood killed commission and trade fees while also offering fractional shares and zero hassle brokerage accounts. Covid lockdowns lead to a lot of people at home with nothing to do, because 90% of the workforce isn't actually needed for anything and without the office water-cooler chithcat to waste the day with, people have nothing to do with their mornings anymore and a lot of income saved from not commuting, eating out, partying every weekend, getting overpriced drinks at the bar, clubbing, etc. Plus stimulus checks and fed pumps. So the markets are flooded with new money that have ZERO understanding of what they're actually doing. Their numbers are so massive that they're making hedge managers chase after them. New traders are shaking the market in ways that are unreasonable, and going against the flow will get you burned so there's no choice but to swim along with them.
