you don't bump into them when out and about is the issue. car dependent infrastructure isn't about meeting your neighbours. its about driving to the nearest strip mall where you have no excuse to talk to anyone. that's not a community

the hustle and bustle of a world on the move, unfettered by petty concerns of livability, this is a world meant to be enjoyed in passing. ignored in comfort. rather then assaulting the senses with novel architecture, unique independent establishments, and other pointless distractions. there is a comforting sameness and a focus on that which truly matters, fast access to a dairy queen every few miles. you know what you're getting, you know what you want, and you know where it is and it's everywhere all the time like a warm blanket of snow.

The 19th century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer also had some interesting things to say about beauty. For Schopenhauer, everything is moved by a restless ‘will’ (roughly what the modern physicist means by energy). This includes human beings, who are forever trapped between frustrated desire (for food, sex etc.) and depressed boredom once the desire has been satisfied. Only when transfixed by beauty, Schopenhauer argued, are we free of this painful cycle. In the presence of beauty a person feels neither desire nor boredom.
