If coinbase is reporting outflows of crypto that has increased in value into cold storage as a gain and the government is seriously going for this, then there is actually an incredibly easy way to play this: buy all crypto on coinbase and then wait for a red day. Move all crypto into cold storage on that red day so that coinbase reports a loss on the outflow. Rightfully report the loss on your taxes and receive a fat deductible that you can apply to your actual normal income tax (allowing you to take home more from your actual job) while still holding your crypto in cold storage.
