Pokerstars is by far the most popular pokersite. It has the best interface and the most players/tables, this also means the competition is top tier. Less popular websites will have a slightly weaker playerpool.
A good player will be happy to earn, on average, 5 big blinds per 100 hands, after rake (the cut the poker client takes). I play just short of 100 hands per table per hour. So if you're playing 2 tables at the same time, you're hoping to earn 10 big blinds per hour. So if you want to earn $10 an hour, you'd have to play at tables with $1 big blinds. This means you're sitting at the table with a $100 stack of chips. Due to variance and sheer bad luck even good players can sometimes have days where they lose several buy-ins, so you have to have at least $1000 in poker money you are willing to put on the line.
