Wealthsimple doesn't let you open a USD side either so you're forced to pay that every time

With other brokers, you can skip the exchange rate fee with Norbert's gambit because you can open a USD side (although this doesn't work out well if USD is dumping like it is right now, you're better off just eating the 1.3% exchange rate fee)
