tired but the short version is the boston bomber thing was reddit collectively playing detectives after the bombing, and whipping themselves into a frenzy being crime solving super genuises. The website collectively came to a few top suspects and harrassed law enforcement to follow up. None of the top reddit suspects were at all connects and it was a massive waste of LEO time and the end of reddit obnoxiously congratulating themselves for being Sherlock Holmes.
The faces of atheism thing is way older. Basically just the atheism board deciding to have everybody take selfies with self picked quotes and they'd do an awesome group collage showing off how awesome they were. Turned out yeah reddit's atheism board is full of the most fugly humans alive and they had a goldmine of cringe quotes. Many of them were self quoting because they thought they were big brain philosophers. They didn't even realize what an embarassment they were until they released their project and everybody laughed at them (this is back when reddit as a whole wasn't as universally braindead and hugbox).
