Newfag here can someone properly explain to me dividends and why so many people here seem to hate them and become autistically enraged when they get brought up?

Aren't dividends just free money? What could possibly be bad about that? In addition to having money invested in traditional stocks how would having a few thousand dollars in a dividend focused ETF or Mutual Fund be a bad thing?
