It's not about not having self esteem. There isn't an internal mechanism where they can derive self esteem on their own. They need other people's validation (or more specifically they need to feel like other people are validating them even if they aren't).

It's the reason why they try to justify being fat as beautiful, but only apply this to women, and where all this feminine talk of "you are valid" comes from. Historically women couldn't survive independently without the support of tohers, so it makes sense that their brains would reward having other people like them, where a man won't care as much.

It's also why "likes" and "followers" on apps like instagram is porn for women's brains. It is what their entire psyche is based on.
