If your gold gets confiscated or stolen that is a 100% loss, bitcoin is still in it's adoption phase so it's expected that it would be somewhat volatile in USD terms, this will change as the market cap increases. The way I think about it if bitcoin goes up in USD that is a USD problem not a bitcoin problem, if it goes down that is only a problem for people that are over allocated and that have weak hands and don't understand the possible future for bitcoin.

Vaults are still subject to third party risk, what happens if the government where the vault you put your silver into decides that it wants to take the silver from the vault? Something like 99/100 banks that you could have kept gold and silver with in the last 100 years have ended up either stealing the metals from the depositers or they ended up getting conquered and the metal was stolen by a foreign government.

So you can either just dig a deep hole in the ground, bury your silver or gold down there. Sure if well covered it probably won't be discovered or confiscated but at that point all you can really do is hope the communists or nazis or whatever that have taken over your state collapse if that process takes decades then you go decades without being able to even use your gold or silver.

Or you can try and smuggle it out where it will probably be confiscated and you are imprisoned.

Maybe you send it overseas but that country nationalizes, maybe you diversify with 10 different vaults in different jurisdictions. and only 2/10 steal your metals. 80% is better then nothing.

However only 1% of people are even capable of storing value in a overseas vault. 100% of people can store value in bitcoin with the only failure rate being due to the users own incompetent rather then uncontrollable third party factors.
