I retired and my car lease was up, so I experimented with this. I went a year without a car, in a city with relatively poor public transportation (closest bus came once an hour). If you have plenty of time and don't mind riding the bus, it's great. I took an uber if I ever needed to get somewhere fast, otherwise I took the bus. Bus pass was so cheap its practically free, and it left plenty of money for uber. I saved money, no question. I could also accept rides from people easily, get drunk wherever I wanted, and never had to worry about having a car with me. It's great, give it a shot.

People really don't realize the effects that job security has on home ownership. Very few people these days actually have good and stable careers with family companies that they know they can work at their whole lives if they want to. Who the fuck would buy a house if they knew that their employer could terminate them after 2-3 years because they don't want to pay them more? And then, they just go hire a new person to do the same job for less money. When you really think about it, outsourcing is what totally fucked the housing market.
