There is no doubt that they will devise a methid to enjoy all the benefits of the CL network without relying on Link token value for payments and collateral.
There is one obvious mechanism by which they can do this. They can have fiat (or crypto for that matter) payments or penalties for nodes built into the contract. Obviously the whitepaper says that the Link token will be used for penalties and payments, but it doesnt lay out any minimums. For instance, a nominal amount of Link (let's say 1e-10) could be staked by each node to fulfill the requirements of of the consensus algorithm and the real collateral or payment could be an automated debit or credit to the bank accounts of node operators, pending (un)succesful completion of smart contract criteria.
They will also be able to enforce contracts that have this mechanism on the betwork because they can privelege known, but competing, nodes with access to their apis on the condition that their penalty/payout scheme is used. That way, they can create a "decentralized enough' subnetwork in the chainlink ecosystem that only requires nominal amounts of Link to manage huge dollar value contracts.
I'm holding just in case this doesn't happen, but you are a fool if you don't think they will do this.
