Seems that my version of Maya does not like to play nice with SMD files of any sort. Got my hands on Blender and will be using that to screw around with files.

Why must every program choose their own crazy mouse setup for moving around? Is it really necessary?

Okay, first major update is that the SourceSDK is a big pain in the ass and does not seem to do what I want. Valve is assuring me that this can be done most easily with SoftImage so I'm installing that at the same time as downloading the AlienSwarm SDK, which is the most recent SDK in terms of porting things in and out of Valve formats, as far as I can tell.

Seems like the hand and shoulder sections are giving some people problems, so I'm guessing this is a rigging issue.

There's problems on the rig for the hand, shoulder and weapon objects--these are swappable objects, so I think the problem is finding whatever doodad (not sure yet, haven't been able to peek at the models) it is that operates as the handle for those other assets, which are stored outside of the default "base" model and simply applied onto it later.

This is not terribly unusual. All of the heroes have swappable weapons, and many other heroes are broken into 'pieces' in one way or another so that normally present objects (like a helmet) can be swapped out for a customized one.

My hope is that there's a simple handle for those things, and the reason for "strangeness" is that they aren't being properly associated or properly animated now that the model/animations have changed so dramatically.

I'm treating it as a learning experience for Source tools.

That is incredibly helpful!

I've got to go make some meatballs for dinner, but I'll try and refresh this thread later to update on progress. If anyone else wants at the source files they can be found at this address:

Hey, doing a bit of cross-board posting here. I'm working on fixing the Skeleton King model in DotA2. He's been replaced due to whatever, and his new model is a bit undesirable to a bunch of people, but there's still the old data.

Problem is, it's got weighting issues. I'm a Maya and Max guy by trade, and this fellow here is all in .mdl format so I'm grabbing the free modding version of SoftImage|XSI to get started on rebinding parts of his anatomy and equipment.

I'm wondering if anyone here is familiar with SoftImage|XSI and feels like jumping in on this to help with a project to get this set up? It shouldn't be such a big problem, but as I'm not familiar with SIXSI I'm sure it'll take longer for me to do alone.

Also, if there's a simple .mdl extension I can use to get it in and out of Maya easily I'd be curious about that.
