If you build up more naturally you learn how light interacts amongst other things and by the time you attempt an epic scene it will be a lot better.

His fault for not listening though.

He is on to something, he just doesn't know what it is and refuses to listen to more experienced people that do know what it is.

I never had issues finding clients early on as I surrounded myself with potential clients.

A lot of creative people surround themselves with other creative types which are potential competitors when they could be surrounding themselves with potential clients.

Also, think small. There are a lot of smaller studios that get their work because they are ingrained in the community and if you have even a semblance of skill you will appear like a god to them.
You can use these studios to gain the all important recommendations and work time. If you have a good portfolio to go with this you are ace.

Once you are firmly in the industry you can then surround yourself with employed creatives and help(or leech off of) each other.
