Nurbs are still used by CAD software such as Sketch up but more artistic oriented software all switched to subdivision surfaces as soon as they came out. Because Pixar and because of a leghty argument about interpolating vs approximating surfaces.

they're very unintuitive. you need to learn either Maya or Rhino if you want to use NURBS with any speed or efficiency.
