why is this something worthy of a thread.

Are you so lazy you can't spend 10 minutes dumping your existing folio onto artstation so you can include it with your applications?

no
most people working 3d professionally dont care about 3d websites and showing their work online and most dont even know half of these sites or care.
whats important to get a job is to have work to show, better to have a personal website, but sites like artstation is fine, and a demo reel on youtube if you have video.
there are all kinds of 3d jobs. many are startups. people who start these companies know nothing about 3d but know they need to hire some 3d artists, so they will post on websites like indeed or craigslist, or search through linkedin.
few studios go looking for artists to hire on 3d websites.

Thats untrue those people will hire via word of mouth only when companies are already established do they post job searches.
And even then small companies in my experience are awful at recruitment so it pays to know people or st least how to find new companies in your country

the question is whether artstation is necessary, not if it help.
of course the more you can expose yourself, and network, the easier it can be. that's obvious.
but having an artstation portfolio is not a key to getting a job. companies dont go on artstation whenever they need to hire someone.
if you even look at the artstation jobs page, it's just listing open positions from various studios. it's not something particular to artstation.
recruiters dont go around looking at artstation portfolios and dming people hoping to get lucky.

job listings come directly from company websites and every applies with their resume, link to work, and go through the process.

with sites like linkedin, however, you do get job offers, especially if you have good experience, and you mark yourself as available for hire there. i've had a number of good job offers there, so if anything I would say that linkedin is wayyy more important as for getting a job.

again there are a lot of 3d job that arent in games or film. there are research companies, medical visualization, government contract companies that have very good 3d positions.
i've been in the field for over 20 years. got my first job off craigslist as a 3d modeler for a manikin company. it was great. if you're looking for work, seriously, game and visual effects are the WORST jobs. low pay and slave hours. it sucks. look for the alternative. medical vis is awesome, anything for a research company is great, and also startups are much more fun.

Fucking newfags are the worst. If you can't handle the "social pressure" of having an Art Station then go back to mcdonalds kid

>> No.788264

if you've really been doing it for 3 months, artstation is not gonna save you. Also if you dont have a pro account your work is never gonna be seen, trust me. Unless it's absolutely top tier

Patreon exists as well, and doesn't have you jump through as many hoops just to make an account and post your work. You can set up your page as a monthly sub or as a pay per product type deal; plus you can offer commissions. I just made my Patreon today to try and sell some models I have been working on for a while now. Hoping that people will at least derive from my work to make something excellent.

Not, but it helps.
If your work is top quality helps with comparing 'true' quality deliver, and if you can follow the shop´s workflow, and schedule pressure.
Might help if you get an agent, because the other part is having your work nearby relevant people.
