Anyone familiar enough with these things to give me an alternative? I never see any real alternatives marketed, is 3D connexion really the only manufacturer of these devices (that's not a direct chinese ripoff)? for how praised they are, I'd think there'd be more competitors.

Honestly I hate the fiddly little fuckers, so that's why I'm looking for something different.

I'm literally making a cheap as clone of this as we speak. Vid rel is just a proof of concept and doesn't resemble the final product
Edit can't post vid for some reason

I have pic related. Its kinda useless. Im keeping it solely as a way to get nice camera movement. Actually using it to model is dumb. I used it all of a month before I started using a regular mouse with out realizing.

I have pic related and I use it all the time. I'm a studied industrial designer.

I've found that you can pretty much just use joy2key one half of an xbox controller for the same effect.

I don't think I'm ready for the Pro edition, let alone the Enterprise - but the point was to find alternatives that *aren't* 3D Connexion.

That looks interesting, I noticed after a few hours of using my mouse doing hard surface modeling, my knuckles and fingers hurt. Would this remedy it?

I have no idea how you work but probably not. This is solely a navigation tool, not a modeling tool - literally all you can do with this is pan, tilt, zoom, orbit the camera, plus bind the two (or like, 15, in the case of the Enterprise edition) buttons to hotkeys. It doesn't replace your mouse, it replaces your keyboard. Sort of.

Maybe consider getting a tablet? Also, take breaks and stretch your hands.

Yeah I do have a tablet but doing Hard surface tasks is much easier with a mouse than pen IMO, breaks and stretches are a good idea but you know how it is sometimes with 10 hour days and being glued to your screen.

You can't use that with one hand only. Buy the used ones from eBay that have the hand-rest so you can actually use it one-handed.

Dude, what? How else are you supposed to use it? Is your desktop made of oiled teflon or something?

It doesn't have enough weight and as you can support it with your hand, it will just lift off.

Either you're slapping it around or the rubber pad on yours is dirty and you should clean it. I have one of those super-shiny Ikea desks which is smooth and slippery as hell and I've never had issues with mine sliding around. And if you need to go so far as to lift it to go up, your vertical sensitivity is probably fucked.

It's just defective design. Buy the ones with the wrist rest, the cheap thing is a complete meme

I bought one when it was on a 50% sale.
Does it work for ue4 yet?

I have the wireless Pro version. I don't know how it is for CAD work, but using it with Houdini for example, you definitely want all the extra buttons, and then some. If my mouse didn't have a bunch of extra buttons that I have mapped shortcuts to, I don't know if I could effectively use it. My left hand would just constantly be going back and fourth between the spacemouse and the keyboard. With my current setup I can navigate and model, and only occasionally need to go to the keyboard to invoke non-shortcut commands or type some VEX code.
