Houdini bros...is it worth buying an indie license or should I just say fuck it, save money and just sim in blender?

>> No.764996

Is this bait? If you have to even ask the answer is use Blender.

>> No.764998

i have heard the preferred workflow is to sim in houdini, export openvdb or alembic and render in blender

>> No.764999

Say fuck it, save money and just pirate Houdini.

>sim in blender
ISHYGDDT
Blender is like the last software you'd want to do sims in, at least pirate Max, Maya or C4D and plugins if Houdini is too complex for your needs, knowing more tools is always a big plus in general.

Where have you heard this? Houdini offers much better rendering functionality, even without considering Solaris (it's new lookdev environment).

You save money, but you also are limited to what Blender is capable (which is not very much).
>the preferred workflow
it's not just preferred, most things are simply impossible to do in Blender.
But you don't have to spent money - first, there is a free limited Houdini version available, you should try before buy.
And second, there is always the option to fly the Black flag and just sail away without paying anything.

The apprentice version is too limited in what it can do.

How big a ssd should I get for houdini? I have only 288gb free on my 1tb ssd. I have 64gb ram and a i7 8700. Should I get another 1tb ssd or a 2tb ssd?

and what renderer are you recommending? Mantra? Arnold? Redshift?

If you can swing $400 every couple of years, Indie is absolutely worth it.

>>765021
>288gb free
A single decently complex solve will suck up the rest of that. Regardless of which software you're using, dynamics caches are enormous in size. Get a 6TB+ hard drive.

>>765022
Not him, but my 2 cents:
3Delight is quite nice, and free for up to 12 threads.
RenderMan is free for non-commercial work and very full-featured.
Mantra is solid and has the tightest Houdini integration obviously, but is too slow without a render farm.
Redshift is great and super quick, but the most limited when it comes to volumetrics tech (no multi-scattering at all for example)
V-Ray 5 is really nice, we are using the Maya version at work. The Houdini version is not yet released, and it's not free.
I haven't used Arnold or Octane so no opinion there.

Isn't it just limited in export formats and render size? Otherwise it's very much like Indie/FX.

cant even export fbx or alembic, watermarks on other exports, tiny render size, no external renderers, only renderer is mantra

Ah right, sorry I forgot about those. Pretty heavy restrictions, it's clear Apprentice is mostly useful only for learning Houdini.

Sucks being a freelancer because of stuff like these. Shit is too expensive and you end up using blender and maybe a couple cheaper packages like Substance and Megascans. Ofc it's easy to shit on a blender when your studio buys you licenses for everything. But what do you work with when you come home?

Even reasonably sized sims can need several gigabytes per frame on disk. The time spent saving/reading a frame from disk is 0.1% compared to the actual CPU computation time. Go for maximum storage, speed is secondary.

Why are people so afraid of pirating stuff? Is it a morals thing?

I used to do all my sims in Blender, but then I realized how much I was missing and pirated Houdini. Once I start making some money I'll probably buy the license.

Tell that to the people coming to you for work.
You tell them a rate that's reasonable and they tell you to fuck off. Fact is, you have to bend your rates to whatever the client is willing to spend to get consistent work.
Can't always rely on the big fish that come once in a blue moon.

>> No.765408

Houdini Indie costs 269$ per year = 22.5 $ per month.
If you know what you are doing, you can use the power of Houdini to make your work 10-25% more efficient (faster) or more detailed and complex.
If you can't monetize that increase in value, then you absolutely suck at your job and shouldn't be a freelancer.
If you for some reason can't get more big fish clients, then optimizing your workflow is the right thing to do. You may not get directly more money out of it, but you can keep more time, which you then can use otherwise.

NIGGA JUST PIRATE IT

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS BOARD

>> No.765493

>>765408
Not every project will require the use of Houdini.
$22 a month is fine on it's own, absolutely affordable if that's all you're buying, but couple that with every other sub-based software, and other subs like Quixel and you're talking up to $100 or even more a month. Which is a big chunk of money to be paying to keep afloat for all but the most profitable freelancers. Not everyone gets the big archvis clients coming to them for work, most of the time it's shitty musicians and the YT crowd.

>>765444
The last thing you want to do in a professional setting is use pirated software. If you can't wrap your head around that concept, you might be retarded. Most companies are fine with pirated copies being used for learning/personal work, but the minute you start profiting off that shit, you're putting a target on your back. They might not come for you, but if they do, you've got no one to blame but yourself. People just don't want to take that risk, no matter how small.

>> No.765543

>>765493
I don't send my clients the project files, there's absolutely no way to identify it was made using a pirated software. Plus, in my country the only business who get fucked for using pirated software are large companies. I worked with plenty of studios and never even heard of someone getting sued for pirated software.

If you can afford it, do buy the software. If not, pirate it till you make it. Not a hard concept to understand

>> No.765553

>>765543
What works specifically for your case in the 3rd world country you live in, is not a blanket statement that applies everywhere for everyone.
No one asked you if you send clients project files, good for you, other people do and some don't. Your specific case doesn't mean jack in the grand scheme of things. Just because something doesn't happen to you, or someone you know, doesn't mean it can't or won't happen.

I think most people opt out of pirating for the convenience (if they can afford it). It's leagues easier to just grab the latest version automatically with no headaches, than it is to wait for someone to crack it, hope you get into CGP, or potentially deal with falseflags for Chinese spyware. Not to mention jumping through the hoops of installing it, most of the time it's piss simple to install, but there's always leagues of retards in the comments saying it doesn't work or they can't install it.
