Really digging this design. How did you make the transition from the tighter bevel in front of the slide to the wider bevel in the back of the slide?

Pic is probably one of the more recent things I have worked on. I have been messing around with materials recently for various applications. There are only 3 spheres and one scaled on the Z axis torus in this render. The rest is all generated in material.

Looks good anon, I always loved Giger's organic style mixed with a mechanical sense and repetition. Keep it going anon, at least get that oily black on it.

Pic related is what mine was based off of. Fomenko's work is super cool to me. I really want to start implementing some wild perspectives and trippy geometry into things in the future.

i'll just list off the tutorials i referenced. these are on cgpeers:

>Yiihuu.com - Creating an Advanced Cinematic Character - Vagrant Knight [English]
>overall workflow + basemesh

this is in chinese but if you just want one tutorial this will take you through the whole process this is it.

i mostly just used it to see the maya/zbrush exchange workflow + the intro to mari

the hair workflow here is actually pretty decent i think (first time i'm grooming so i'm not really sure what's wrong or right yet).

the skin albedo/diffuse is imo using the wrong resources here. there are proper albedo maps available now so i used those instead. he doesn't really do a roughness map either and i think his subsurface map methodology is probably wrong as well.

for shading skin in arnold my only reference is arvid scheinder on youtube.

>Scott Eaton - Portraiture & Facial Anatomy
watch this. i'm going to go watch it again.

>Gumroad – Xgen: guide curve based grooming essentials
this guy seems to know what he's doing when it comes to x-gen and has good production credits. there are two other tutorials by the guy available on cgp (search Tarkan Sarim) but they use x-gen interactive vs old x-gen. i have no idea which one i 'should' be using. i might sub to his patreon for a month and just rip all his videos.

>Introduction to Xgen - Jesus Fernandez
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUc6qgjz_Tgvl2FQoNBdDraFs91A1Exmi

i've been meaning to go through these, they look pretty good.

maps used:
>TexturingXYZ – 20s Male Face Textures
>texturingxyz_displace_male_fullface_04 from 'TexturingXYZ – Displacements Collection'

projected in mari. be warned, don't do commercial work with pirated mari. desu i might roll back to their trial license because i don't actually need 8k/udim tile.

rendered in arnold (randomwalk v1 for SSS). first project in ACES colour space as well.

If this is a first attempt thats not bad. You should watch out for Tri and N-Gons. Basically areas where 3 or 4+ edges meet at a point. Ideally you want to shoot for quads where 4 points intersect. it would make UV unwrapping and texturing easier. Since its a car you dont have to worry about deforming things. For the wheels and spoiler see this stack overflow about Tris to quads. Again not super needed for non deformable surfaces but good practice to have.

General art direction is pretty awful. Shader on the buildings lacks modern rendering techniques, level of detail on buildings is all over the place. Literally nothing seems to be textured. It sort of looks like an m203 but it's clearly a tube magazine for the 40mm grenades. Only thing that isn't obvious is if it's supposed to be auto loading or pump and what the little cutout below the ejection port is supposed to be for.

>>718018
I'm going to ignore the sob story you wrote and jump straight to critque, because I think it's just unwarranted panic, the texturing is okay, steel's a bit too procedural for my tastes but it's okay. Main issue with the gun is the actual base geometry, it's way too lowpoly, blocky and the proportions seem off in a lot of areas.

Why not follow the Tim Bergholz AKM tutorial first then try and taking another shot at this? I know it's an overdone meme at this point, but everyone has to start from somewhere, a /3/ man such as yourself should already know where to get it if you can't afford it.

Same here, never actually held a gun before either.
God bless America's gun culture, dudes have stores selling each individual bit and piece of a lot of guns, even guns as "obscure" as the Helwan, https://www.gunpartscorp.com/gun-manufacturer/helwan/brigadier , those pictures, a bunch of references, videos of it firing and field stripped. Helped a lot. I imagine you can probably find even better reference when modelling a Glock or something.

I didn't intend to model the interior at first but if there's one thing I learned from this experience is that you'll end up having to model a large bit of the internal slide, receiver & magazine anyway if you want someone to animate the gun

Quick tip, if this is blender, there are known issues with Blender's glass material not allowing enough light through or requiring ludicrous amounts of sample to let light through.

Here is a node setup you can try. I often use this in product renders when the product is inside of something glass like or when you need to see something clearly on the other side of something glass.

And the real glass shader for comparison.

The glass shader is basically a Refraction Node, with a Gloss node plugged into a Mix node with a Fresnel node plugged into Factor. In the previous fake glass setup, you are essentially replacing the refraction node with a transparent node.

I hope this helps!

I just compared each of the RGB channels to its own unique white noise with a "greater than" node and then combined the output into RGB again. I think the problem is that the SSS isn't constant. Baby yoda is an actual practical effects puppet, so the ears have a lot of subsurface but the head itself (presumably) has lots of opaque mechanical bits inside. I also suspect that some of the details you're trying to do with subsurface scattering (like the rosy cheeks and red eyelids) are actually just painted on, and that the inside of the ears is made of a different redder more translucent material than the rest of the head, like a different polymer or dye they carefully mixed in during the moulding process. Could also be that the green skin is painted on top and the whole thing is red inside but the ears have a thinner coat of paint.

Oh I agree and understand, partly what I was trying to go for was out doing the puppet which I am obviously FAR from and I ended up going for making this work in real time instead which is why the thing is full of hair cards. I fully intend to have some SSS in the face despite the actual thing not having any, I was initially trying to generate the SSS in shader using the Ambient Occlusion node, the pointyness node then bake that to a texture, but at this point I think I am just going to have to go in and paint my own texture for the SSS intensity for the best results.

Alternatively, if I can just figure out how to export a thickness map from Substance Painter, I think that would work well too. The thickness map generated in substance seemed at least close to what I want.

I don't think it's all that crazy good though, or maybe I just don't think that about myself. A lot of the composition is piggybacked off another artist ( >>716975 ). I just wanted to see how close I could get while putting my own spin on it.
The scene is dead simple too. All the people were just vector cutouts motion blurred in photoshop, then just put on a bunch of planes. Thank you. It's always nice to know somewhere, someone likes your work enough to make it a part of their lives in some way.
I've got more stuff over here if you're interested.
