>Work for an engineering firm as an in-house graphic designer
>Pretty much no interest in architecture or buildings, just a day job
>Company comes out with a new residential lighting system that they want to show off
>Problem is we have no budget to pay some company to make a concept render of the installed system
>Using Blender and a cracked version of Corona I fuck around extruding some shapes for about a week, watch some pajeet tutorials
>End up with the most boring cookie cutter pinterest-core minimalist house design you can possibly imagine
>Company has nothing better so we end up using it in our advertising push
>A month passes
>Get an email from HR
>My design has been nominated in the yearly national arch design competition by one of our customers
>It's actually fucking real
>5 months pass, I'm at the fucking awards show
>I don't win but come 3rd and pick up a cool $4000 USD for a design I smashed together in a week with a bunch of free models
>mfw someone fucking asked me what architecture school I went to
A fucking chimp could do this shit, get out there and do architecture /3/, it's ripe for abuse.

And for obvious reasons I can't show my actual model but it looked pretty damn close to this, I heavily copied from my inspiration boards

Yes, sure, anon, I'll do that, as soon as I actually get such a job.

The biggest hurdle isn't actually making the thing, but convincing other people to pay you for making such a thing.

What did you tell them, and what was their reaction?

Modern "achitecture" is just cubes. Everyone knows it's just a fucking joke.

post your actual work, I very much doubt it looks half as good as that render

Yeah, when somebody with engineering knowledge gets in and starts making everything actually translatable to reality. Concepts are for selling, not for building.

I'm completely with you, but taking it a step further. I'm a mechanical engineer but fucked around on Blender for a while and can do pretty solid concept designs and renders, and it's accelerated my career sooooooo much.

Like all things in life, Blender is what you make of it. If you apply it smartly to the correct niche, you're gonna go far.

Wouldn't it be faster for you to use a CAD focused tool, such as Fusion360? I'm honestly curious. I personally find that, for concepting, sculpting > polymodeling (organic), and CAD > polymodeling (hard-surface).

Why would you willingly subject yourself to such pain?

How do you get to study this craft on your own?
I don't think I'll ever get to work on this, but maybe to design my own house in the future.

In some countries civil engineers do all the work (because it`s only physics and squares) and they cuck architects

I work as an installation engineer for a company that deals with GPS antennas.
I regularly mock up installs and design plans with Sketch-Up, better than our actual designers.
A couple of times upper management has seen these and thought it was their work. Surprised when they hear it's mine.
The designers get paid more and work so much less... might try to switch departments.

Sorry what I meant was is that I use a CAD tool (solidworks), but use it in combination with blender to make great presentation rencers and sometimes simulations for how it will work within a scene
