I'm about to get hired for a new job where I have to model things in Rhino. They've sent me a test project to make and finish in less than a week.

Anyone here know a Rhino tutorial for someone who knows nurbs modeling (in fusion360) but has no experience with Rhino and its command based workflow?

Rhino is so awful, fuck man why you do this to yourself?
If you want to get good at rhino you just hotkey everything to a multi button mouse, and all your F1-12 keys, and use alias for everything so you only type one letter, and use most recently used commands to get things done fast. It is brain dead, repeating the same commands for hours and hours work. Almost everything happens in 2d anyway.

yeah well, the people I'm going to work for, for some reason, use Rhino exclusively. at least grasshopper is pretty neat.

Rhino is the industry standard for every shop I’ve been to, or even heard about. Forget what basement dwellers say. Hot keys are definitely the way to show bosses that you are competent.

is there any comprehensive guide for a total rhino noob?

What makes Rhino so bad in your opinion? Seems like it's pretty much the best option for archviz. Not bad for product design either.

Rhino is a clusterfuck of a program designed to do everything and unable to do any of it well. Boomers like it because its one program but things would be so much more efficient if we never used it at all. Grasshopper is a buggy crash prone mess that will give you brain tumor trying to find wires and nodes for baby stuff houdini does easily in folder nodes. Fabrication requires exporting to s3d rhinocam or netfabb to do anything. It can't open autocad documents with too many lines or everything slows to a halt. Revit is completely different and so much better for teamwork/serious arch work. Sketchup is faster and looks better for schematic design presentations. Our competition designers literally use the free version of sketchup and spend their day converting rhino files into sketchup because its faster than using rhino. Rendering is a nightmare with mandatory plugins, and no real time eevee/redshift/octane advantages, no animation, not nothing. The simplest models take hours to render. Our firm literally turns off the windows to make it render faster. Sometimes we screenshot the wireframes and pay someone to photoshop a render out of that because the shit can't render at all. On a good day, we render mat ID's and photoshop that with a grayscale render. OBJs crash rhino easily. You have to use proxy's just to get furniture that looks fake in. Make2d is a stupid hack that barely works and our entire workflow is based around waiting for hours for it to compute. You can't make models as complicated as real life without it lagging to hell. Everything in rhino remembers everything and if you make a model using the "wrong" way of doing things it breaks. Like if you boolean union or extrude surfaces in the wrong order it fucking dies and you just have to memorize the order rhino likes to do things. IDK anything about product design, but its terrible at making water tight volume nurbs models so who knows how it does at injection molding.

the only thing rhino is good for is grasshopper, which is beautiful

So 3DS Max is the way to go for archviz? Both for modeling and rendering?

>In the real world
Sketchup is what the designers use because its fast. No one gives a shit about architectural renders. They care about getting something done in time for conference calls/meetings. Sketchup can handle much more complex mesh scenes than rhino and it is easy for schematic designers to change things. It has vray but vray is slow and the designers doesn't know how to use vray so 99% of the time a screenshot in sketchup gets the point across clearly to the people who matter.
>modeling and rendering
In almost every project there will be 20 different models of the building. Rendering is not important, HVAC/structural/code compliance teams have do the 3d modeling. Rendering is a combination of random old models, hardcore revit models, and it all happens in your photoshop. 1 week photoshopping one render out of basically thin air. Bosses will give you garbage files with broken everything and you have to make a rendering quickly so anything goes.
>3dsmax
Too slow, nobody has time to model all the detail when you could just google image search + photoshop stuff, and your firm won't have a license for it.
>archviz
Rlease reconsider. Archviz is a hellish business because every licensed arch firm has 10+ unpaid interns begging to get in the door for their AXP hours. They do all the arch viz for free. If you don't have an arch degree, you are lower than even the interns. By the way, the interns do a lot more than just modeling and rendering, they also have to be good with superglue and basswood and xacto blades and have a portfolio of physical 3d models made of wood.

Aren't there visualization studios or freelancers whose only task is to make top-quality renders of architectural projects? The kind of renders that would be given to an investment firm, or a government agency, for example, to pitch a project.

if you look, almost all of the usa ones are sketchup looking non photoreal looks like drawings. the more photoreal ones are photoshopped photocollagesea from vray. architects want to hide as much of the building as possibble in the render so the locals dont freak out and oppose it. So lots of blur, car in the foreground, trees, and glass is photocollage reflection of existing stuff not glass. They dont want good renders. Govt and Investment firms ask arch firms for renders so however archs do it is how it gets done. Always cheaper to do renders inhouse. Also, because archs only get paid if they win the submittal, pretty much everyone running puts in low effort and only polishes things after its been approved, to amuse the principals/put on the firms website. Teaching arch viz is easy, buildings are easy to render, but the job market for it is rough because designers are in charge and do not delegate 3d stuff. Why not do product renders or environment art? A lot easier than real world arch viz.
