Whats up with the jobs in the game industry?

Why is there a job for lighting? Like seriously wtf there are 5 buttons to press for that. Why can't the devs do this themselves?

Why is there a job for social dialog?

Why are there pointless jobs in this industry?

the tech field in general have a very poor human resource management. mostly because people like to work with their friends

oh and also, lightning artist is not pointless. some of them also make props and nice to have someone that knows how to do it right.
how many shitty lit renders have you seen so far? that's because lightning takes skill

lighting has no "skill" required. Literally play around with the strength slider and transform it around.

>> No.627087

>>627081
that's not true. Would you say the same thing on a film set? Everyone has their role. There is no such thing as a useless roll.

nah real life lighting is actually hard, but in 3d engine fuck no.

I wouldn't hire you. I want someone who knows how to use proper lighting in my enviroments. If you think it's just playing with sliders and the transform tool then you're a brainlet.

If you really think that's all there is to lighting, you shouldn't be even thinking about lighting. There's so much more to it. Making sure scenes are well-lit and expose what the director wants the viewer to see, having contrasted colours in lighting for better effect, basic studio lighting techniques like rim lights and soft shadows, yadda yadda. It's far from "uhhhh this light too big for this scene".
>>627088
It only becomes easier in 3D because you don't have to physically move enormous lights around, you don't have to care about light intensity limitations, you don't have to care about getting the correct bulb with the correct temperature/colour. Otherwise, you still need to know how to set up your lights in a scene so things look good.

And why do you think people skilled in social dialogue are "pointless"? They're the negotiators. They talk it out with other studios and even governments to make sure things go smoothly and you aren't doing anything illegal.

You have to realise, none of these jobs are pointless. A real pointless job would be to be asked to sit in a chair and do nothing. These jobs exist so things can get done faster (provided everyone does their job). They exist so _you_ don't have to do them. The less things you have to worry about, the more you can focus on your actual task.

Maybe this board should stop circlejerking over how much they don't like Blender, and start bullying the fags who come in because they wanna make video games and think that's all there is to 3d art

To be fair gamers can be happy with something like Minecraft or roblox. Maybe this guy is right, game dev is a totally different field. Game specific jobs:

The loot box guy
The guy who convinces the government loot boxes are not gambling
the guy who writes the non disclosure agreement at the start of the game so they don’t get sued
The guy who programs the in game real world currency store

I could go on

I know these are troll posts, but I don't even understand the premise here. In what sort of software do you find "five buttons" for lighting?

I get that the point was to make people rage about how lighting is actually a difficult thing to do, so mission accomplished I guess ... but a good troll is usually based on something with some amount of truth. Any software I've ever touched has a billion different settings and "buttons" for lighting.

Saying "lighting is easy, there are just five buttons" is like saying "modeling is easy, you just press the sphere primitive button." It doesn't make much sense.
