I do this too, but for graphic design/illustration.
Why fumble around with Illustrator's shitty perspective tool when you can take a few minutes to set up a 3d scene and trace over it.
Shit I even use makehuman to get basic human shapes when I need them. Pose, render, and use it as a base for vector illustrations and shit.
I don't really think it's a sin, or cheating. Just like the other anon said, smart use of a tool.

As for /3/ sins, I've been 3d designing for like 6 years and every time I model something complex it still seems like I've just hacked something together. I usually do static scenes so it doesn't really matter all that much, and I'm not looking to get in the industry, but still. I wish I was better.
I don't even model my own cars when I need them, I just use rips from Forza. I figure the end result would look the same anyway.

Eh, just remember your makeup components. Foundation and eyebrows can be ignored since those are more reparation than addition. Eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush, lipstick. Eyeliner should almost always be black. Red and pink complement really well for the most part. Other colors like blue and purple work nicely for eyeshadow, try it sparingly for lipstick and they may look odd for blush. Extreme colors like white or yellow should really only be used when trying to achieve a certain look.

If you're anything like me I don't think the secret is "just buckle down." The secret is to come up with something you _want_ to work on that is as simple as possible, yet interesting enough for you to find it rewarding and satisfying to put the effort in and see the results.

I've tried to learn things in the past by using that "just buckle down, just start reading books, just start watching tutorials, do this the right way" kind of mentality and it never worked. I'd procrastinate and be paralyzed by weird fear and anxiety like you describe.

The way I unintentionally overcame this with 3D was by seeing a piece of art I appreciated and being like "that doesn't seem so hard, I bet I can do that." I came up with my own conceptual twist on the art and decided I really wanted to make it, which gave me an actual tangible goal that meant something to me, as opposed to making a boring donut renders because that's what Mr. YouTube Tutorial Man told me to do.

One I had this goal in mind I just jumped into the app I was working with (C4D at the time) and started clicking around and figuring out how things work. When I'd hit wall and not know how to proceed I'd Google it and find relevant tutorials.

Everyone's different, but this really worked out for me. I was surprised to be making stuff I actually cared about within days, not months like I expected. A lot of the methods I was using were wrong, but I eventually learned the right way to do things out of sheer necessity of needing to execute more advanced techniques for more advanced projects.

tl;dr try to relax, come up with something fun to make, start experimenting, don't worry too much about what's right and wrong, and if everything goes right this process should motivate you to start learning and get the ball rolling. good luck, have fun.

Not to stop the dick sucking. But, if you want to become a character artist you have a long way to go. Sort of 16 hours a day for two years long way to go.

No character artist for example wants to see Zbrush sculpts as you can get people who good at Zbrush but it can't translate into production.

I wouldn't waste your time with characters if you need a job, you should focus on maybe envrionments even then if you haven't touched substance or UE4 maybe that would be a hurdle.

I'm saving up to quit my job in a year time to neet for a year to become good at character art.

Currently doing all the hours outside of work to get good at it.

Not sure I could even get good enough when I take my chance next year.

The joke is that I will be 30 next year, living at my parents house, a virgin. Doing character art 12-14 hours a day. With also no friends.

Wish me luck. I been reading about some Japanese artist and they have messed up lives. The guy who wrote Made in Abyss has a messed up life. Frank Tzeng said it took him two years to get good so maybe I can match him.

Exactly senpai, I'm aware that sculpting is a fraction of the necessary skillset. Topology, rigging, animation, all the textures and efficient UVs, engines, lighting, materials, and most surely shitload of other stuff I don't know of yet matters more in an outcome.
In the job I was mainly focusing on setting the scenes in Unity, interiors, some buildings, so working with environments is actually a good idea.
The problematic part: I was always focusing on human/creature form when drawing, so it sounds like an obstacle to overcome when I would focus on, let's say, hard surface things - it's a completely different, and I can't count on my out-of-3D skills much. It doesn't mean I couldn't become good one day, though.

But you know, there has to be some norms, some industry standards 3D studios (and software companies, in that case >>626788

If someone asked me how on earth I was able to deliver (sometimes with results much better than expected), it was because of luck, my talent for improvisation and the fact most important projects were developed in tandem of me and my friend (he was coding all the features). Take a break. Seriously. Go do something else; pick up a new hobby. But take on something that'd be productive and beneficial, like learning how to cook or play an instrument. Don't default to video games and keep yourself in a rut.
The thing about art is that it should be passion-driven (keyword: should). If you don't want to do it, then you won't be able to do it. Sometimes, that feeling may lie in your subconscious and keep you locked out. The attitude you should always have to your projects is "Yes, let's get this done!" rather than "Ugh, let's get this over with". If you've been feeling the latter, then it's definitely time to step back and find yourself. Don't entirely detach yourself though, after a short break go and take a look at some art on a platform like Artstation. It'll rekindle that creative spirit within you and you'll want to create stuff once again.

Blender is a well recognized stressor, mainly because of its UI. It's considered the first cause of psychological injury among workers in the 3D computer graphics industry.

The response you experienced early upon exposure is not very common - symptoms usually begin after some time, typically days or even weeks - but I would consider it a good thing. In a way, it protects you from hazardous levels of exposure to the program, and it could even be considered an evolutionary advantage.

Bear in mind that I'm no doctor. I'm however a recovering patient, after having been diagnosed with occupational injury due to repetitive stress caused by continued usage of Blender. But I'm doing well. There is treatment (behavioral therapy, mostly, usually coupled with administration of Autodesk's certification exams), and it works.

Hi friend. Just a quick heads up that things never get any better and that even if you do get some help and hold it back for a year or two, it will return with a vengeance and ruin your life all over again.
You should definitely speak with your doctor and find some local groups if you're not ready to end it all just yet.

I let some idiots ruin my 3D class in highschool. The teacher had a great program laid out to teach us modelling, but then this group of these 3 guys said they wanted to do their own projects, but the lessons involved the teacher taking over each computer monitor and showing us the instructions for the project and he said he couldn't separately control each computer, so it would interrupt their self-teaching every time. It was a small class, and they asked the teacher to change the program to self-teaching, the teacher told me if I wanted to be taught it would take preference over those kid self-teaching, but they sighed and groaned and I had a brain injury so I caved really easily under social pressure, and I let them change the class to self-teaching lessons.

The years that followed were extremely horrible and grueling for me, those kids mostly worked on 3d physics and special effects, but modelling for me was living hell. I would look up tutorials online, follow them to a T, reread them and reattempt them literally 10 times in a row and they never worked because they used a different version of 3dsmax, shit like vertexes would refuse to weld. I was never lazy, I kept trying and trying for years to self teach myself and nearly every single tutorial I ever followed never worked, I got so depressed I spent 3 years making spiky cubes because none of my projects ever worked out.

I even tried downloading and pirating newer versions of 3dsmax so I could study at home, my ISP knew I pirated things occasionally and would throttle my internet connection to 15kbs, so it would take like 3 months to download, my shitty computer probably wasn't powerful enough to run it, but I still tried. I tried using the keygen a hundred times, and the "cracked" program but it never successfully opened itself, I tried like 3 different cracks of 3dsmax, and none worked, who the fuck ever said pirating is easy? And if you're wondering why 3dsmax is free for students now, it's honestly probably because my teacher would personally email and harass and beg the developers to let students have the program for free, he was like a saint, he never got it completely for free but he did get a huge discount.

I even tried to be those 3 edgy kids friend and they rejected me, I died and sacrificed years of talent for some fucks who didn't give a single shit about me. I am honestly close to crying, this was one of the saddest things in my life.

I'm self taught. Over the past years I got better and better, but I have been on the same plateau for the past 8-12 months and am no longer growing as an artist. Sin is that I'm considering quitting because I'm not sure if 3D is worth the frustration to me. The problem is that 3D is one of the few hobbies I've ever had that's had any real meaning or made me feel fulfilled. But that fulfillment that came with becoming more skilled has been replaced with the frustration of becoming stagnant and I don't know how to fix it.

This is common. Even though it doesnt feel like it, you are growing as an artist. This plateau is not you reaching the ceiling of your ability, it's the recognizing of the magnitude of the journey. Every day that you continue to create is another step towards reaching the next boom from the bust you find yourself in. That breakthrough is on the horizon, and I promise that you will be upon it before you realize its happening. Please, don't quit yet. You'd be robbing yourself of what you're truly capable of.

You are still trapped in the valley of suck?
Adopt a bushido mentality. If you are not familiar with it go read up on the hagakure for example.
Exchange "death" for "failure" and the desire to become a great artist with lord and master.
You need to die a thousand deaths to be reborn as the ultimate artist.
That's the way how to think about it.
It may just be a hobby for you, but it still works out like the archetypal hero's journey.
