Blender is still who-gives-a-fuck tier, most people stopped contributing to its open-source.
Autodesk can't bring anything new to the table, updates are pointless since 2021
Zbrush is battling with a new sculpting software that can handle as much but requires a drastically less autistic workflow
CGI for games and movies are still eons apart despite what people believe now
VR is as cool and relevant as the Wii is to us right now in 2017
Many Maya and C4D fags have switched to Houdini. 3ds fags hold on to the Max.
Some folks still claim that PBR is a pointless fad
Hipsters have tried to bring Softimage back via crowdfunding. They failed and left for Japan with little money they made.
The Rock has been 100% digitized before suffering a tragic death in 2024. He stars in 18 movies each year. The uncanny valley is strong.

Blendlets, when will they learn?

>> No.592139

>>592006

It's free if you're some hipster playing around with 3D in your spare time. If you're a production company where time is money then no, Blender is not free. If you're an Autodesk client then they have someone available 24/7 to suck your dick if you run into a problem, and that's why major studios use Maya because they need that kind of support and what they don't need is their production being put on hold while they search online forums for a solution only to have some neckbeard tell them "git gud, noob".

So yeah, if you're a professional outfit, Blender is not free.

>> No.592142

>>592033
>Blender foundation literally pays people with actual literal money literally collected from actual donations.

This is one of the reasons why Blender needs to fix its broken UI. People aren't even giving Blender a chance because they know the UI is shit and that you're unable to get the software to function until you've memorized a bunch of two and three finger hotkeys (rather than having the memorization of hotkeys be a natural part of using the software overtime). When Autodesk gives away student licenses for free and when all the jobs want you to know how to use Autodesk products why spend time suffering Blender's shit AI when you can just learn what the pros use, faster and easier.

Without new people picking up Blender then the percentage of users who will donate drops since most people will only donate to the software once, and new people are discouraged from taking up the software because 1) it does everything ass backwards to every other software, 2) the user base is hostile towards any change 3) the user base is hostile towards anyone who doesn't like Blender's torturous way of doing things.

This is why Andrew Price got death threats from Blender Users when he suggested improvements that were needed for the software.

>> No.592144

How is that relevant to anything? You could say that about any software that you're used to compared to ones that you don't use.

Anyone who shittalks Blender in this thread has probably not used in in years. In fact a year ago i was thinking Blender is still the same shit, but then i saw a video of it, tried it out and had to admit it became a legit program. The biggest reason big companies still use the same programs is because of their pipeline, but Blender could become the future of newer studios.

the UI needs more options before blender can become usable

for example retopofow and rigify make blender pleasant to work with, and with stuff like bpainter and bake tool i can see why blender needs a UI overhaul. its not the tools that are bad, but they are simply not accessible, everything is all over the place.

i used blender for years and i do just fine.
but pretty much anyone that begins using it can't find how to change edge shading and get stuck on the bake options. this is not coincidence and iv seen this happen numerous times, and its due to interface problems with blender.
i mean, if i didn't ask i would probably never know how to change edge shading. and if i didn't across a very specific video i wouldn't know how to bake multiple objects. i didn't have to do those things with xnormal or other programs

Not same anon, I know all 3D programs have them. The problem is that Blender's is cluttered (not that other programs are any better, just more organized, which isn't saying a lot).

Which begs the question if Autodicksucker user is aware that his precious Maya has that issue too.

if blender gets improved UI, it means alot.
we could have the baking tool replaced with wizard menu (like in xnormal)
we could have the texture painting tools be more intuitive (layers and palette settings should be easy to manage)
the left panel should have icons for better use
blender should come with pre-made lightning setups because it takes too damn long to get the lightning right
oh yeah and the biggest issue. they need to cancel this edge split/autosmooth crap and just let us shade edges like we shade faces and save it to a vertex group in 1 click

oh and i guess the final thing would be is to have quick merge option, merging is a hassle and abit hard to find. i want to be able to quickly weld verticies at final vert without having to navigate and click buttons

>> No.592263

>>592261
oh and give blender more brushes, more decals, and a dedicated decal tool you can use without having to load up textures.

and for fucks sake, don't force the user into creating a new texture for every operation, it should be fairly obvious you can only paint/bake with a new texture

>> No.592265

>>592261
>>592263
That's what always gets me about Blender, it's got decent modeling tools, and its animation (not rigging) tools are okay, but then there's everything else.

But the lighting and texture painting systems are horrible and primitive to work with. Lighting especially, since I can never get a good interior with the shitty tools it has. I shouldn't have to keep using expensive plugins to produce acceptable lighting. And even those tend to be a crapshoot at best. But we know they'll never update the lighting systems and lamps themselves.

That isn't to say I hate Blender unlike some people, but I'm more than willing to make light of its flaws, speaking as a user for nearly a decade and following its development since 2.49. It needs some serious improvements in many areas in order for it to be better than it already is. And hopefully (key word here) they address some of the more serious problems during the 2.8 builds.

....considering its a DC one, I'm not that surprised that it was considered to be great, especially right after the BvS and Suicide Squad disasters.
