Learn to name your objects as you make them, and put them into display layers so you can easily hide/unhide stuff.
If you find yourself doing the same action repeatedly, consider making a hotkey for it.
Expand the menu that's on the right to the left, so it takes up two collumns, then you won't have to keep dragging up and down the menus. Better yet, get a 2nd monitor and throw that bitch on to the 2nd monitor, along with any other editors you use, like the material or script editor.

Oh yea, from what i've noticed, editable mesh is faster than editable poly, especially for heavy scenes. But mesh has fuck all editing options available to it.
Leave your models as editable poly until it's 100% done and ready to be rigged, then convert it to mesh.
