I made this once, never did anything more with it. I had to make the bodywork of a car as part of a group project in college using a model car as reference. We had to make it in PTC Creo, but I made it first in SketchUp since I had a few years of experience in that. I got it looking right in SketchUp and then used it as a reference for Creo.

Let's face it. SketchUp is a pile of shit that went downhill right from version 8. If I could tell my 14 year old self who wanted a modelling program, I would tell him to trash SU as soon as possible after learning the basics from it. Full of functions that noone needs, but lack of simple but major functions even in the payed version.
I was using it in middle school from like version 6 and I had to realize that even adding 40 plugins couldn't bring it up to the level of blender. Which is also fucking free. If I would have spent all that time learning Blender and After Effects, now I could make a living off making $2 presets for slideshows and intros/animations for youtubers for a few bucks...
Now if I could send in animations to Ted-ED and similar places, I would be well off.

I use sketchup daily for architectual design. What is your first alternative?
Been in the industry for 12 years now and there is nothing I can't do in sketchup. CAD plebs always bringing me their files asking me to make it look nice in 3d, then when I open the file up they have hundreds of thousands of lines ontop of lines cos they never learn how to manage their files for a 3d space.

CAD users are cancer holding the industry back.

I am a student, I'm going to be learning 3DS Max this summer and I am still debating with my self if I should learn revit. I went to an architectural firm last week and the draftsmen were telling they prefered autocad for technical drawings and max for the renderings. One of them told me revit still hasn't "matured" enough for them to completely switch over.
What do you guys suggest I learn? I'm currently using autocad + sketchup and photoshop

But they will because blender cannot house all the details and sections sketchup can, let alone be accurate.

Sure you may have something pretty but then they will go tell you to turn the file into something they can use... then you will bumble out muh blender then they will laugh

Simply incorrect. I'm an architect and have used sketchup professionally for years. It's the preference of most clients and competitors because of its versatility.

>> No.525069

>>525048
They are right about revit, it's not ready and sketchup just keeps getting further and further ahead.

The thing is, you can do your tech stuff in sketchup plus have something ready you can import straight into max, rather than remake it from blue prints. That's a pretty common workflow for people who use sketchup, although a lot of people I know are looking for alternatives to max now. Stuff like unreal and twinmotion seeming to be the most popular choices.

certainly takes a lot of talent, but a gundam really is a great thing to make in sketchup, its mostly blocks with no serious organic curves/meshes so its very doable.

The two things I miss about Sketchup is the ability to make Components(?) where you can make a change to one and it's reflected everywhere, and to arbitrarily group things so you can hide/move a whole group at one time.

It honestly helps when you have a complete disregard for topology and just worry about softening edges when you need to. You're absolutely correct though that sketchup quickly becomes a tedious nightmare even with helpful plugins when doing complex curved objects.

I'd seriously advise anybody that REALLY wants to make this stuff in sketchup to download and pirate any plugin they can to build upon the scaling tools and manipulation of edges.
