/3/, I am looking for a tutorial that teaches rigging as painlessly as possible. If you know of a good one, please share.

I use Maya, and am mainly interested in rigging for game engines. Of course, knowing how to make full movie-style rigs wouldn't be a bad thing.

not even trolling. Just fucking google "<software of choice> rigging tutorial"

It's not going to be painful unless you're a moron who can't follow instructions.

Rigging is simple as the following.
>You get a skeleton.
>Place it and pose it on over your mesh so that it matches arms, legs and so on..
>Use your skin modifier to attach it.

You've just rigged! Congrats.

Now if your talking about skinning thats another ballpark as you've now got to assign how much influence each bone has on each object.

a hard surface object like that will all be 100% influence.

Now you are using Maya which has the worst possible rigging system, switch to max as everyone uses that for rigging and modeling as its just better for games and industry.

and yet the most advanced rigging system ever made - Tissue - was made with Maya.

Don't forget about making a UI that doesn't make the animator want to shoot themselves in the head.

you don't need to skin hardsurface objects though that won't deform. parenting & constraint systems are adequate.

What about IK and FK systems? 3ds Max or Maya?

no offense, but you don't sound like you know what you're talking about
Art of rigging tutorials and animator's friendly rigging tutorial are a good startpoint anon. If you're interested in rigging with max, Paul Neal's tutorials are a solid introduction

I'm less interested in the hows of basic rigging than the whys of more advanced rigging logic.
