He was a production artist before, which meant UVs had to be made, unwrapped, models optimized etc.

But the intent of black phoenix project was to show how FAST he can get ideas out.
To render them in Vray would entail much more work than keyshot, which is made to be fast rendering middleware.

Can the same results be achieved in V-Ray? Of course. Even better actually With even more baked in 3D elements like fog, sparks, embers, whatever.
But for the sake of speed, things like that are added in phtosohop.
The end result is just an image, the concept to get the IDEA across.
You can't make a movie or game models using this method which is very popular.

Does that mean his process is bad? Or wrong?
Hell no.
He makes a lot more now than he did as a production artist.
The point is that's 3D specifically for concept art purposes, which is why you don't see many other shots of the same models at different angles.
To go over each one and paint them over with the same level of detail would take a lot longer.

Yes, keyshot is simple. You won't get paid or hired as a "keyshot artist" or anything like that, but there are jobs for experts in vRay.

Because he uses expensive HDRi images and then does further tweaking of the result in Photoshop. Often they'll render multiple light directions and then blend them in Photoshop for finer control.

No he doesn't. The HDRs he uses can be bought for $25. I think its his girlfriends takes the photos or some other friends of his. He advertises the site of hers all the time.
