Looks like the render wars is over. Pixars Renderman 19 is free for noncommercial use, for anyone, including non students, no restrictions, no watermark. Commercial use price reduced from $2000 to $500 if thats how you roll.

HOOOOOOLY SHIT

This is awesome news. I've been looking into switching rendering engines for a while now.

More studios should do this. People who don't want to purchase something will torrent it, but they are not bound by any agreement like they would be with a non-commercial license.

Isn't Renderman the Command Prompt equivalent of rendering engines? In other words, isn't it complex as hell to use for beginners without any training?

it used to be but now its like "just raytrace everything, you better have a farm, see you in 4 hours"

so, vray?

its better than that. it will take a long time to render however.

Where's that faggot who bought Rederman just to steal some Bad King's zBrush model and render it? Maybe he killed himself because of the news.

I've talked to that anon on irc and he's alive and well. He no longer renders offline.

just because you render online doesn't make you good

From what that anon told me, he said that he moved to 30fps rendering and never looked back.

Is this just the 4chan irc or an actual /3/ channel?

If the latter, please post network

The former. /3/ is slow enough as it is it might as well be a chat.

True but it'd be nice to have the 3-4 people who actually hang around here in a channel.

Yep, and it has one of the slowest raytracing implementations out there. I use it at work and some of the render times, in scenes optimized as must as possible, are scary. Current renderman versions are designed to use shadow maps, point lights, and all the old school stuff, so this shift to path/ray tracing is awesome.

Actually prman 18(current) has fast bidirectional pathtracing and area lights for any object. This new RIS raytracing is already the industry standard and as the examples show, give less noisy results in less time as well as being more accurate than any other algorithm. Its fast as hell and the quality is obscene.
