depends.
3D is actually superior for animation/games, has lots of new tools and methods to develop while in 2D you can't relly on tricks like flash animation if you want to make something great.

There's simply no way you can make certain effects with 2D.

Also, for still images (which was your point) 2D is much cheaper, you can even blend photos, etc.

After all, they don't have to compete, if you look at gnomon workshop, many top artist render 3D and paint on top of it.
