1) When you say chiseled, can you elaborate? The look I'm aiming for with the gun isn't a new shiny one, but perhaps one that has been sitting in storage for many years, perhaps even with a bit of rust and pitting around the barrel and metal areas.

2) Seams are being fixed as we speak, am still working on the UV + texture, esp making seamless transitions for the engravings.

3) Screws are temp, still need decent painting. Am tempted to model some of them in.

4) The wood texture is actually the most high res part of the gun, any reason for it looking blurry would be attributed to the render settings, but I'll look into clearing that up. As for it looking crappy, can you elaborate on it? I've always been told here in /3/ to make stuff look gritty and banged up, rather than clean and shiny and new, so it was the look I was going for on the wood.

5) As for ther sharp edges, I'm working with a low polycount (<1700) to see what I can crank out. Granted that some of that polycount is being spent on some internal areas such as the ejector mechanism for the barrel, internal hammers etc which aren't visible until the gun is opened for reloading, but I do intend to work heavily on the metal receiver(?) area to make it transition to the stock a little better.

6) As for ambient occlusion, I've already baked in the shadows to the texture, perhaps I should make it more evident and pronounced.

Thanks for your crits, will return soon with updated renders, there's still a lot of texture work to be done (particularly on the receiver area/trigger guard).

Forgot to mention, orig texture is 2048x2048 for both diffuse and specular. Not sure at the moment if I have the skills to do a high-poly model for baking decent normals, with engravings etc but I intend to make a 2048x2048 normal as well with clear details such as the manufacturers writing on the barrel and boxlock. What's the current texture resolution and polycount for most current or next gen game viewmodels for weapons? I know the polycount is stupidly low already.

As for the normal, I used Photoshops nvidia plugin (ugh), but got NDo2 yesterday and am going to learn it as best as I can.

Diffuse texture attached, any critiques on other areas are welcome, although it is strictly a WIP - the buttstock is a photo at the moment and I need to paint one, and the triggerguard/trigger assembly looks disgusting and needs way more work.

yeah i'm not a texture artist at all. I'm surprised that's the first thing you noticed, and not my shitty floor texture.

The actual wall normal map is completely fucked and when I threw it into marmoset, all of the lights were showing things that I had stamped out in the wall's diffuse but not the normal. so i had to cheat the camera and lighting so it didn't actually show that stuff.

I appreciate the critique and feedback, but I won't be working on this project to make it better. I've got a lot of animation work to do.

It helps.
Noobs starting with zbrush often think dynamesh and sculpting form a sphere is all the rage, but it isnt. Often you will want lot more control over your mesh when doing more complex stuff and you will be forced to import base meshesh from other software.
Also it helps to jump fast between lets say max and zbrush.
When sculpting you mostly need a good feel for form and anatomy knowledge, and reference. But when you just want to detail something up you can get away with a lot.

figure out where the center of gravity is located and rotate around that pivot (this point is often outside of the body during acrobatic performance),
when you make a flip you really don't magically start to turn around your hip bone.
It will help to start the animation with your character initializing the jump so you can figure out just where the torque comes from and how much force is proper,
once he become airbourne you let him keep that velocity flowing and only alter it by extending/pulling in limbs, same principle as ice dancers in the olympics doing their spins.
Make the animation feel rythmic with a clear flow of forces troughout the motion.

It may help trying to imagine yourself being inside the body, think about how the motions feels to you, make it look like it's alive and counciously controlling the muscles troughout the motion,
right now it really looks at best like a semi awake, intoxicated, astronaut tripping in zero G.

Try just painting your normal map in height-field and use the nvidia PS pluglin to generate a normal map from there. Usually auto-magic normal map makers suck ass for these images. first make sure that your normals are pointing in the right direction, different software have different conventions.
Notoriously the green channel of a normal map needs to be inverted when going from max to maya and vice versa.
Secondly realize that anything you put trough a algorithm like crazybump or the nvidia filter etc will look rather poor
because all they do is converting some emboss type image filter into normals, and these will never turn out very well.

Normal mapping was originally conceived to convert 3D mesh angles into bitmaps, for doing stuff like projecting high poly geometry onto low.
Making maps using filters is not a process for getting accurate normals but rather a budget hack for getting some of the effect going
without having to make a proper highpoly model.

One can mend normalmaps created this way into looking okay by painting in missing 'key' depth details by hand, but that takes both expertise and time.

Ok so I made a cloth simulation for the sail on this old sailing boat.
I "nConstraint Transformed" (don't know what it's called) the vertices where the ropes are going to be tied. Messed around a bit with the wind settings and it looks quite good. But the problem is, I want to animate the boat to go around, and when I do it the sail stays in the same place.
How do I attach the sail to the mast without ruining the simulation?

That's quite an interesting looking.

A big part of what it's doing is mixing flat vertex lighting with a phong style of lighting. So it shows big polygons, but they also have gradients.
And easy way to get that would be to, on the shader, just do a mix(phongDiffuse, vertexDiffuse, 0.5);
