Why don't you try moving away from the clay brush a bit ? Have you tried the clip and the trim brushes ?

You actually build planes with them so if you want to learn to build shapes fast they are better.
And instead of the clay brush use the move brush to "add" material.

>> No.405866

>>405838
No they are not better but the are right they are a bit underused by beginners, mostly due to being very destructive, you must know what you are doing to do something with them.

Anyway clay brushes are really good if something i would recommend using alpha 06 with clay buildup and flatten/hpolish.
Much superior combo over trim brushesh, more control less hassle.

>>405866
>, mostly due to being very destructive
Destructive, lol. I don't how to say this without sounding like a prude ... there's no such thing as destructive in sculpting. You either take the material out or you add it. If you don't like the change you go back.
It's better to start the sculpture with very "destructive" tools and methods like that because you work faster. You don't want to start a sculpture slowly.
It's the same way with paintings - start with a broom, finish with a needle. Haven't you heard ?

>> No.405910

>>405905
No i havent since you talk out of your ass.
There is no rule for starting a sculpt, i for one like to have a good base before i start going seriously into it, so i spend same attention at the start as at the end.
And there is destructive, there are tools that affect only small portions of the mesh in subtle manner, and there are those like clip or trim brush that will cut the model in half

>> No.405913

>>405910
Of course there are "rules". It's like you've not even watched a single instructional video, let alone had an actual education.

You start with big shapes. Big forms. And you move to smaller forms. Hence brushes which make big changes are good. And as for the model geometry .. who gives a shit ?! We live in the era of dynamesh and zremesher.

>> No.405916

>>405913
This guys sounds like he torrented a gnomon workshop vid, watched half of it and decided he was an expert.

Listen, your speed sculpt was decent at best. I agree with the gist of what you're saying - starting with a broom and finishing with a needle is a pretty good rule of thumb. Thing is, when it comes down to it it's up to the artist to figure out what works best. Arguing over and nitpicking about general rules is fucking retarded.

Both of you idiots should just get into Zbrush and play. Shift delete all the crap floating in your heads that you're arguing about and play around until it clicks.

Then bring back something that won't make my eyes bleed and some helpful critique.

>> No.405920

>>405916
>your speed sculpt was decent at best.
It's not good and I never said anything else.

My point was very clear - the geometry is irrelevant and there is no "destructive" tool. You start from a ball, there is nothing underlying you can destroy.

Heck if you somehow mess it up so bad it's unusable (to someone with your skill), a good exercise would be to get the tool back in the shape of a ball without the smooth tool. It's the beginning exercise in sculpting and the only one I actually remember from the sculpting courses I took as a joke in university years ago.

Bullshit, my best sculpt are made when my topology flows well with my strokes and forms.
I hate working high poly and good luck making forms when you are consists of tris 6 edges verts and shit,

Dont assume your workflow is the correct one.
Also unless you mean trims adaptice which is basically just flatten brush then all trim and clip brushesh are hard to control above the very early stages where you affect only the contuses of the mesh, but at that point you might as well use move brush or clay with high size.

>> No.405929

>>405927
Well that's probably exactly why you stick to the clay brush, I personally have no problem "destroying" my topology because I always start from a ball or a zsphere so there was never any topology there to begin with.

With your workflow it's better if you switch to Mudbox, that app has much better brushes for working with basemeshes. Zbrush predisposes to a dirty, dynamesh centered flow.

In fact what I've read is they changed a lot of the brushes after they introduced dynamesh specifically to make it easier to whack a high "poly" models around with speed in.

It's good that you're understanding forms now.
If I look at your first one you had blobbyness.
Now just give the proportions of the head.

Like /ic/ would say....
>Loomis

The forehead seems too large.
The head shape gets wider towards the back of the head all the way till the ears. In your's it flat straight.
The placement of the nose and mouth seem slightly too downwards and should be placed slightly up.
The neck is not a separate part, the sternomastoid is connected behind the ears and it creates a straight downwards shape. It doesn't go inwards.

never rush anatomy studies, make sure you understand one limb before going to the next one.
Anatomy in both dosnt make much sense, you got some mains forms in but thats just it, the overall structure is all wrong.

You always need reference. Even the best artists use reference. The problem is if you get fixated on the details too early on, you pay less attention to your over all form. Which is why some artists would pick the flat shader to check the silhouette of their sculpt. Other artists use the blur feature.

Your head is a lot better now. Some stuff I would fix would be:

-your subdivision is 1 or 2 levels higher than necessary.
-your temporal line is too narrow on the front view; and pushing too close towards the forehead on the side view making the forehead flat.
-ears a bit too big and low.
-pull the upper lip from the side view just a bit farther than the lower lip
-add a bit more mass on the temporalis.

That's it for now.
