it was pretty easy for me. I even got a letter of recommendation to get a scholarship after I finished my first odesk job.

My first client just sent me a message through my YouTube one day, and I've been working since.

Despite what people may tell you in college, work experience and proof of said experience are more likely going to land you jobs than education, knowledge, and/or skills by themselves. If you have some kind of proof that you know how to do something and how well you can do it, finding a job isn't that bad.

I never had issues finding clients early on as I surrounded myself with potential clients.

A lot of creative people surround themselves with other creative types which are potential competitors when they could be surrounding themselves with potential clients.

Also, think small. There are a lot of smaller studios that get their work because they are ingrained in the community and if you have even a semblance of skill you will appear like a god to them.
You can use these studios to gain the all important recommendations and work time. If you have a good portfolio to go with this you are ace.

Once you are firmly in the industry you can then surround yourself with employed creatives and help(or leech off of) each other.
