I have realized, after 4 days of struggling with making a complex picture with AI difussion, that I could draw by hand the open pose texture, the img2img texture and the depth map.
By hand on Krita.

After 30-40 minutes I got this, at the first try.
I was like wtf, this is kind of magical shit moment.

I feel like I was like doing magic.

But right now, I've realized I could use my 3D ultra cheap workflow, to generate the color, open pose and depth map, of a custom character animation, like in a single afternoon.

I think, I am at the brink of some major discovery in gamedev.

I started to work towards my dream when I was 15.
April 20 of 2005.

Basically practicing every day and studying, non stop.
Every day.

Until September 8 of 2023.

Has been a really long time, more than what anyone here would even conceptualize how long I've been training.

Basically 2/3 of my life, alone, in my room, only with an internet conection and some shit like a wacom and some keyboard.

No friends, no parties, no degree, no IRL relationships beyond my closest relatives.

No fun.
Only practice and study.
Day after day.
Book after book.
Course after course.

It wasn't easy, and I had quit and gave up so many times I lost the count.

But.

I've reached the end point.
The end of the journey.

I am finally outside the doors of the training facility.

It's been so long I have no clue what happened.
But I am outside of the long journey and path of trials.

I did it.
I reached the end.

Now I can go and try to go to the dragons lair, for the greek fire that will kill the giants of ice.

I did it.
I can now slay the dragon.

I have finally come to the conclusion why realism is the most important thing in the visual arts such as drawing and animation, and I have come to the understanding that realism as understood by a baroque master is very different from how it is understood by a modern artist and the modern variants of photorealism and hyperealism which are rather modern aberrations of baroque realism.

>We trully can only see the old masters but we really lost the understanding they had of the platonic realm.
That understanding wasn't lost, but it has changed.

You are correct about realism being different from photorealism. The old masters would never think in terms of realism, they didn't really have an idea of non-realistic art that they could compare it to. Artists would live their whole life as as artists, from a young age they would be apprentices. They didn't have to learn maths or literature or physics, unless knowledge of those subjects would improve their art. They didn't need to work retail to keep themselves alive. Everything was dedicated to art. And so the art wasn't realistic, but it was highly highly skilled, and depicted life.
"realism" came into being when people wanted to make art from everyday subjects, to depict real things, real bodies. People sometimes thought it was degenerate.
And then you know, European history happened, the industrial revolution happened, photography was invented. Capitalism became what it is. Apprenticeships went away. People started to live in poverty, people started exploring new ways to paint.

The soviets made the decision to maintain traditional art skills. They had art schools, they developed Socialist Realism as an art movement. It was not realistic, but it was highly skilled, and wasn't abstract or cubist or surreal. of course it varied a bit, you can find some surreal examples, but crucially the artists were highly trained, highly skilled, and went to specialist schools.

>> No.958338

>>958337
And of course the soviet union fell and all that was lost, as far as I know. But before it fell, in one of the rare cultural exchanges with China, the soviets established art schools in China. Those skills are still taught in China, but that's where the change happened. The requirements changed, it went digital, it needed to be commercial.
That's where artists like Ruan Jia come in. They make anime stuff, fantasy stuff, but with a lineage of skill that goes back to renaissance europe. Western artists try and try but they can't match their level of skill. They can't understand light that this realistic and unrealistic at the same time. They can't make things so real and so painterly, they can't figure out that kind of transcendent realism.
Of course western artists are great at lots of things, but I haven't found one that can quite pull off what the Chinese are doing. And they try, they translate live streams, buy courses etc.

Photorealism and hyperrealism are of course as you said, modern aberrations. They don't have the same lineage of skill. They work by taking a photograph, and then painting a copy of the photograph, including all the artifacts that come from photography. You can figure out a way to do this on your own. You don't need a teacher, it won't take a life of practice. It's impressive, it takes a lot of skill, but it doesn't have the same magic.

of course it wasn't, but if you want to understand art history you have to understand how changes in the organisation of the economy changed how art was produced.
Or would you rather not understand something and just get triggered at the word capitalism?
Before capitalism, if you wanted to be an artist you would go to an established artist when you were a kid and ask to be his apprentice. If he said no, you would go be a miller or a shoemaker or a blacksmith.
Artists survived through patronage. A rich man would pay you to do portraits, commission stuff from the bible to go to a church, that kind of thing. As an apprentice, you would meet the powerful people in your city and build relationships with them.
There are good and bad things about this!
It means you would struggle to explore new ideas, it means only very few people were able to become artists, you would only really be able to make Christian art, you would be dependant on the whims of some rich guy and couldn't fire clients.
But it also means the meme of a starving artist wasn't a thing. If you couldn't study art, couldn't get access to paint, couldn't get access to PAPER, then you just could not be an artist.
As capitalism started being a thing, you had more artists outside the patronage system, selling portraits to merchants and lower aristocrats and stuff. But before capitalism you didn't have van Goghs running around painting mad shit and living in dire conditions.

Mass poverty as we know it IS largely an invention of capitalism btw. A pretty high unemployment level is desirable to discipline labour and keep wages low. Supply and demand. if you were a feudal peasant you weren't in "poverty". Your standard of living was shit obviously, but you didn't starve unless your ruler was a cunt or there was a natural disaster. it wasn't built into the system the way it is now. There are positive and negatives to this. The standard of living today is higher, even for people in poverty (in the west).

I understand your point, but it's used in semantics only, in the material reality poor and shit living standards are in the
bases the same, as for wages, the market is the ruler of that, low wages means more supply than demand.
If you see the supply/demand concept as a constant and not just capitalism, it's normal that artists were well paid, more demand than supply, inverting this and you have artists living in dire conditions. You are completely right that In famine times the ruler gave food not the peasants, but that is not a real measure of poverty either, since in famine times market prices went high.
Even if we took it to the linguistic realm poverty is traced to the 12/13 century and capitalism as a defined concept to the 16century.

Being poor and having shit living standards aren't the same, I would rather be a wagie today than a king 1000 years ago.
>the market is the ruler of that
the market isn't free, supply and demand are controlled deliberately. Grocery stores throw out edible food, landlords warehouse housing stock, all digital goods have infinity supply, central banks change interest rates. And yes, we try to keep the unemployment rate relatively high.

Of course people were poor or starved before capitalism, but there wasn't really such a thing as unemployment. We can enter poverty at any moment, we can lose our shelter, and we can do that individually. That didn't happen. Whole communities could become impoverished overnight before capitalism, through no fault of their own, but individuals wouldn't fuck up like that. Which is why this is relevant to art history, today you can choose to become an artist and increase your chances of entering poverty by a huge amount. That is going to change the kind of art that gets made.

I'm not making an argument that capitalism is worse than feudalism, and I'm certainly not making an argument that socialism is better. Basically everything I've said applies to any socialist economy that ever existed btw, they've all be organised in various ratios of state and private capitalism, and they all take part in the global capitalist market through trade, and artists have to sell their work on the market. The only exception to this I can think of is probably North Korea, which you can argue is more feudal than socialist. Saudi Arabia might be an exception too, since citizens have guaranteed income through the Citizen Account Program - they get a share of oil profits. This is also literally a feudal country, but a pretty weird one as basically all citizens are aristocrats.

>> No.958521

>>958403
Supply is controlled because supply is the product itself and if you don't control it prices drop because the demand is less than supply, the other way around is the government regulating the supply /demand by doing things as retarded as imposing minimum wage, that's another way to control supply and demand because it generates less work (less demand of work) and a lot of supply of unskilled workers who want to work for less but they can't by law, and this is completely against the market regulating itself.

I have to agree about the unemployment for unskilled labour, but for craftmen I can at least tell you that the guilds were the ones controlling the rates, so it was in some way or another regulated.

In the point of art itself this is true but the same applies on your example, given that you only could do art that supports your patronage in many cases the church.
Given that a working artist does art only for the demanding themes or styles of the era they live in, and does art as an expression outside of the work or patronage.

I have to agree also to an extent about North Korea, the system is basically feudalism and their art is ok, but basically compressed of western old influences, so no much of advances in terms of art.
And that's my point after all, creating something new is always risky, and a free market society is the one that gives you more rewards for the risks involved, making art less stale.

>> No.958538

>>958521
>Given that a working artist does art only for the demanding themes or styles of the era they live in, and does art as an expression outside of the work or patronage.
True, but there are a lot more markets for art, and novelty is something that capitalism demands. There's also the possibility to be a skilled hobbyist, which wasn't a thing.

>lot of supply of unskilled workers who want to work for less but they can't by law, and this is completely against the market regulating itself.
No worker, anywhere, has ever wanted to work for less money. I know you mean there are people desperate for work who would work for minimum wage. Minimum wages have not hurt workers. The idea that the market should be "free" or that the invisible hand can regulate the markets is simply dogma. It's a theory unsupported by any evidence. You've fallen for propaganda. I know it sounds compelling when explained, how it all seems to flow elegantly from the laws of supply and demand, but that's just not how it works in reality. Deregulate markets, and the market players with the most money will start to regulate it in their favour.

I think I have the basis of a new entire medium.
I want to make it more like a magazine of a manga.

However, I've decided it would be wiser to lock the manga light novel aspect under something like a minigame inspired by the chapter, to keep things spicey and bring the excitement videogames have.

However, the level dungeon exploration side, I think it would be a better fit to use low poly pixel art dioramas, and use ideas from pop up books to have some interactive dioramas instead of speding months making levels.

Having said that, there should be some shops, inspired from 1950 american magazines, because It would be fun to design such ads of fictional stores inside the world, to acquire simply dumb items or maybe use them in the dioramas, and unlock like stuff inside of them.

Having said that, the combat, maybe it should be a good idea to keep separated the lock of new chapters, with some tutorial version of the minigame and just instead of using something like direct combat, maybe I need to just keep the character doing something, a reaction from some object, and then using a timer or score as losing or victory condition, instead of rellying on kill and be killed type of cliches.
Maybe use enviroment traps to make the player waste time instead of being killed.

Having said that, maybe I also need something like a combo practice mode with dummies enemies and a timer, to be set when the enemies arrive to fight.

I doubted your work on many occasions, it was easy to think you were just some troll looking for attention, posting shit just for the fun of it. I thought "it takes skill to make something this bad, perhaps this an art piece.. a mockery of 3D art". However throughout the years I realized you are the embodiment of resilient failure. Someone without the ability to quit or change despite the work created being utter garbage. I'm routing for you to pull your head out of your ass and make a masterpiece man. Every time I see your work it lightens up my day. You motivate all of us to do better and grow as artists. both of these are shit for different reasons.

My workflow BTFO all these Triple A developers who have to spend years just to draw one character over and over. I will be able to make more varied and quality artwork than them in a few seconds

Humble yourself and try to put the things youve learned to good use, by making a small project and seeing it through to the end. You'll probably gain a ton more experience and possibly the respect of the board if you'd do so.
