Has anyone else tried using the blender grease pencil to try to replicate hard-pixel pencil tool aesthetics in 3D? I've been fucking around with it but it seems like square peg in a round hole type problems keep propping up.
gifrel is what i have managed to make work

I kinda like this and I've posted something a while ago. You can assemble rough 3D shapes with metaballs and then paint them over with Grease Pencil. If you're good at 2D drawing, it's kinda goofy but it works.

One annoying ass issue I was having was the grease pencil showing up as a wonky size while drawing that changed depending on zoom/angle
Anybody know why this happens/how to fix it?

After fucking around with it, I guess it has to do with the surface offset of the grease pencil. It looks kinda fucked up at 0 offset but at least it's consistent, and I can always move/sculpt the offset myself manually.

i understood nothing
if you want it to not look bad from side view, you have to place it right on top of mesh, theres no other way
>>940648
just stumbled upon this trying to read if you can regulate the offset

That's something I've noticed because I tried pic related first in Blender 2.76 and drawing directly on surface works ok there.
When I tried to re-do that in Blender 3.4 I had issues specifically with drawing very close to the surface.
Could it be that the old OpenGL viewport render has better z-buffer precision than Eevee? Maybe there's a setting somewhere to increase it? Maybe it's known issue?

Also I think that the Displace modifier can be used to slightly shrink the surface for rendering. You can leave the texture field empty and adjust the Midlevel parameter. Should be less expensive than Solidify.

By hard pixel pencil tool I meant the aliased "pencil" tool that exists in photoshop and gimp etc, that lacks soft edges, in contrast with the "brush" tool. I have a certain autistic nostalgia for the look.
By square peg in round hole, I meant blender was never designed for this aesthetic, and I'm using workarounds to make it possible.

Also, yeah, I did find this video and it was helpful, it just feels really hacky and is visually obnoxious in the 3d viewport. My more recent attempts of this today have been using a combination of this trick and some manual sculpting. Also the side-view floating of the lines was intentional, but I realize it was exaggerated a bit too much. I think it looks good when floating just on top of the surface.

if you want some pixelated paint.exe strokes theres a pixelate effect, although it looks weird during animation
theres also some square "caps style", but i have older version of blender and cant check how it works. would be nice if they finally started doing proper documentation, im so sick of those youtube videos

is there a source or library somewhere with a list of 3d visual styles?
I mean, I obviously there's handpainted, cel-shading, pbr realism, etc but I'm talking about more granular and specific styles like >>940603, hand-drawn, clay, 1bit, etc etc. I think it would be neat to look at when starting projects and challenging myself to try different styles, but I simply am not aware of, or remember most styles
