786603 No.786603 [Reply] [Original]

I have been building 3D portfolio, gathering free/premium 3d assets files, basemeshes, kitbashes, as well as my own 3d files and renders in preparation to start building robust portfolio for about 2 years now
yesterday in my attempt to download premium malwarebytes for free, ironically i got infected by ransomware from sketchy site, it encrypted all of my files on my PC and now i can't open anything. i tried to decrypt them but it's nobu. extension and online encryption which is unbreakable. all my files are basically lost. ransomcunts are asking for 980$ to decrypt my files back but i dont have money and would never pay them even if i had it.
man
2 years of grinding
fuck me
i was about to buy external hdd i knew something was gonna happen
this is absolute rock bottom and waste of time
at least i cant go any lower ill try to build back up from knowledge i gained over these years

So you lost some stolen models and shitty assets for a portfolio you hadn’t started yet. Anon pull yourself out of tunnel vision.

You probably haven’t made anything worthwhile up to this point. Just start your magnum opus now like you intended to, without all the shortcuts and leaning on your past shitty work. If it wasn’t shitty, you’d be an employed 3D artist by now.

Couple of days is not a lot of time, don't know why you're talking about a feature film still. That would take even longer. If you think that's too long for a single prop and are also suggesting to just make 2 good models, are you seriously saying one could build a portfolio in a few days?

What kind of work would that be? Definitely not environment or character art I assume.

You'd have to invest at least 10 hours for a small to medium sized polished prop, which could be done in one sitting, if that's what you mean. But is 1 prop enough?

I know that 1 environment can be enough though, as that's the only thing I had and I was getting job offers from it, but it took me a month to create. Current projects I'm working on are already a few months long. I don't have props in my portfolio.

There's a very small chance that your particular cryptolocker was cracked by an AV lab and you can find how to decrypt your files.

But get a NAS or a cloud account and start backing your stuff. Do it today.

>> No.786914

>>786888
Well sure, but I don't feel like I'm ever giving my 100% to an individual prop when I do environments because of the much bigger scope. Most props are not a hero quality in that case because that micro detail usually won't be seen. I focus on the bigger picture when I do environments and can't put a dozen hours on literally everything. When you only focus on a single asset you want to showcase in a portfolio you can go full autism mode.

Quick related question.

Does anybody know how effectively a ransom encryption works. Does it encrypt all files, the entire drive, or is just some lockout type of faux encryption. If it's a soft lockout thing then all someone needs to do is connect their hdd to another pc as a secondary drive, using the OS on the primary hdd or ssd to navigate the files and move them.

>> No.789216

AFAIK, typical ransomware really encrypts the files.

i wish i was kidding, i was gonna torrent some shit i needed but i wanted online protection before doing it, after bit of searching found out that 99% of anti viruses slow your PC down so that you buy their "premium" version and finally operate at normal speed, they're also invasive and hard to get rid of
so only real protection left was malwarebytes but you need full version for online protection

now do you think someone who needs malwarebytes for torrenting shit was gonna pay for that full version
so ironically i got infected by what i was trying to protect myself with

If you are new to 3d then get used to this.
If you stay in this field long enough you wont even care about your 10+ year old files, you will be busy making new shit.
And if you work in a studio at the end of 3 years of work you might be told "ok, this projects is getting shut down, delete everything" and you cant even show what you have spent 3 years on to anybody. Had this happen twice before, but luckily we didnt go long post prototype.

Its good to throw up finished images to a folio. If its was just some librarry of premade shit then you lost nothing
