You can buy the Foundation and then close the source. How would an open source fork compete with Autodesk Blender? Most normies would jump to the proprietary version, especially if something like a free non-commercial version is made available. Only GPL fundamentalists would continue using the fork.

But in truth, Autodesk doesn't care. Blender is no competition to them.

Only last night the software giant Autodesk announced that it has been interested in Blender for quite a while, mainly for it’s fast modelling workflow and compositor, and the foundation have just agreed to sell Blender to Autodesk, where it will be assigned a new development team without Brecht or ton and will only be available to independant users after the summer. It will retail for £3200 for an individual License, and £233,000 for a studio license.
Regarding the Blender conference, well quite simply it won’t happen. As the head of the new development team said:
"Obviously Autodesk have very high standards of professionalism, so we have decided that to avoid damaging our reputation we have decided to ban the dutch fanboy clubhouse meeting that they call the “Blender Conference” and replace it with the Autodesk conference, which will be held in North Korea every 30 years. The only two events in the conference will be an autograph signing by the AutoBlender(as they are now calling it) developers, as well as shoe polishing.
Another subject people will want to hear about is the Gooseberry project. Autodesk have confirmed that AutoBlender will not have open movies, as they are free to enjoy and that is against the Autodesk policy. Regarding Gooseberry specifically, The new chief developer has stated the following:
“Gooseberry? are you serious? It’s a recipe for disaster. Have you even seen the other open movies? first there was the emo one, then the sadistic animal torture reel, then the one that promoted Women’s rights and Zoophilia. They are all directly opposing everything that Autodesk and consequently AutoBlender stands for and making another one would be detrimental the the golden reputation of Autodesk. And the story? it looks like chaos. It’s really just a pile of unnecessary shorts jammed into an hour long Blender Fanboy montage. And the director is French. Autodesk will not allow this to happen.”

Most files in the source are copyrighted to the Foundation, so it isn't even necessary to track contributors. Autodesk layers would most certainly solve any hurdle of this kind in less time than takes Blender to crash on undo.

For every other piece of code that might be difficult to relicense, rewriting it should be enough. Think of how quickly Pixologic built a better cloth brush; Autodesk is magnitudes bigger, so they could do even more if needed.

The truth is that Blender continues to exist only because Autodesk allows it.

what sort of retard fantasy take is this? Autodesk could buy Blender and own the code (presuming Blender doesn't use other external GPL libraries in its codebase), allowing them to close source future work, but everyone who already licensed Blender under GPL (read: ever current Blender user) has the right to see, use, and modify the existing Blender code forever. You can't just revoke a license because you feel like it unless the licensing terms allow it (which GPL obviously doesn't). That's the opposite of how licensing works.

The only way to kill Blender is to buy all the core devs. Good luck buying out freetards.

I don't know whats with niggers like OP that their tiny little brains can't tell the reason all Blender sculpts look so simplistic is because the fucking joke of a program can't handle an actually detailed sculpture. "Muh soul" is rather a result of the artists not being able to work with more than 2M polys. And iirc 2M polygons is like 1/50th of what Zbrush can handle even on entry-tier CPUs

Not even this would kill blender. It would always stay GPL. They could not even fork it and make it closed source without violating the GPL. GPL has this "once GPL, always GPL" principle.

How many would be motivated to use it when you can get Android for free. It's not like Google suddenly demands 3000 USD for an Android license.
Google can not close source Android, but they can close source their services Android uses.
Likewise Autodesk could just take Blender, create their own fork of it (which would still have to remain GPL) and they'd need to publish the code changes they did. They could at the same time publish closed source plugins for Blender and sell them.

You do realize that all android phones have their core OS entirely open source right? It's why cyanogenmod (now lineageOS) gets ported to all sorts of phones without any help from the manufacturer except for the occasional threat of GPL enforcement for companies that try to skirt the GPL.

The only thing that's closed source are the Gapps, which aren't even part of the OS. Chinese phones (a huge market you are ignoring) don't even come with them because they don't work properly in China.

You drastically underestimate the legal power of the GPL.
