Is this a good thing? Why did SideFX need investment? Should we switch to Blender?

>> No.782257

they dont need it, they just wanted the exposure from the deal

This is how it begins.

This is all smoke and mirrors. What's really happening is China is investing in them. The Chinese are going to own all the fucking apps by the next decade.

Epic is doing everything I want in regards to game engine development. As long as they don't get to the point where they ban controversial game developers, I fully support the fact that they fully support their game engine. I don't care about their games store, I don't pay for games.

Houdini is becoming relevant for videogames at a rapid rate, for example all the destruction in spider man and miles morales is actually done in houdini and imported into their engine via alembic cache. Epic also wants into the film industry with UE (ie. the mandalorian).

It's a no brainer for epic.

nothing to do with blender?

Epics collaboration with houdini is just getting bigger. This means better implementation of existing features.

>> No.782362

>>782338
You can import alembic to UE4? I thought it was just an AD meme cache format outside of film

Epic Games also invested into Blender (though, technically that was more like a donation)

If Epic is giving them money to improve their tech, that's most definitely a good thing.

Maya and Max aren't getting any new innovative features lately and it's grinding my gears.

Some underdogs getting money from billion dollar companies just increases the chances that the big boys will have to get off of their asses.

The number of new features in Blender and Houdini is starting to pose a threat to the big corpo boyz.

They need to stop banking on the fact that they're the set standard and go above and beyond. If this helps SideFX and Blender get a leg up on the Autodicks, then more power to em'.

I don't like the corpos either way in this situation. But I see this as a race and I'd prefer for 3DSuck Dick and Mayass to lag behind.

No. It's the beginning of the end for SideFX, will probably get absorbed into some gaming company crap.

>> No.782396

>>782382
The only reason Epic invested in Houdini is its procedural nature, it would be absolutely retarded to mess with the way it works and turn it into the crap you've mentioned. SideFX team is way too talented to let that happen.

As long as the company remains financially healthy and independent.

They’re a minority investor. Most likely the funding will go towards fast-tracking gaming related features/IO, which has been an area of interest for SideFX for years.

I doubt they needed it.
Epic is spearheading the next big leap in TV/Movie Production using Unreal Engine and thanks to Covid most productions that use UE have been able to make content super cheap with much smaller teams that do not have to travel.
Just about every other AAA game studio is using Houdini now and I bet Epic wants to streamline its use with UE just like they have been doing with Quixel.

>Epic wants to streamline its use with UE
Houdini Engine runs perfectly well in UE, its already pretty damn streamlined to work with both in combination.

>> No.783677

HEngine is not quite there yet. Assets can't make a round trip (Houdini->UE->Houdini) yet without losing custom attributes.
