Rate my sword (beginner).

I did the first two levels of the donut tutorial and then wanted to create something own. I tried to make a sword and somehow figured it out. I used some basic stuff I learned from the tutorial and experimented around and it took me several hours, but I am so proud right now so I wanted to share it with you.

Also sword thread. Show off your swords.

i dont like how basic the handle part is

hey man, i don't think this is bad at all. the render makes it look really nice, like it could be in a cartoon-y style project. i don't have any models of swords on hand, but you should keep at it, my dude :)

I tried to recreate something similar to the "Spatha" (Germanic, Roman and Viking style) swords, which all have such kind of basic handles. I am fine with that as I am not really skilled when it comes to 3D modelling yet. I also wanted to make sure to set realistic measures so I looked up the measures of archeological finds.

But you are right. What would you recommend to improve? In detail the handle object has a dark-red and fluted surface. The distance of the camera and the light don't really show that.

Thank you very much :)
While working on that sword I noticed how I become more and more confident with using Blender. Right now I am very motivated to experiment and try things out. Could become one of my new hobbies :)

Spent too much time on the render and not enough on the model

Why do you think so? Setting up camera and light and rendering went pretty fast.

What could I improve? What is missing? Textures?

I like how the handle looks like it's squeezing the blade and making it look like a pointy, slightly-filled condom instead of metal because of the bad smoothing.

You'll get there anon, but keep practicing the basics before you move on to more "complex" models. The donut tut has a bad way of making newbies think they can make something look good all by themselves because they followed 1:1 instructions from someone that already made something look "good". Like a paint by numbers thing or following Lego instructions. You didn't actually make something, you just followed the instructions and made something that someone else made.

Still, keep at it. A week from now you'll be better off, a month from then even more, and a year from then you'll be laughing at the stuff you've made now.
I'd just keep beginner studies to yourself for the most part, or at the very least post them in the wip thread so they get more attention from others looking to improve.

I mean you are new so I could list a billion things you might be able to do different but there aint much point you know? Maybe I was just crabbing, it looks good for you just starting, you will get better and more technical with time.

Op I've also started out doing a sword, one thing looking back that I'd do that I see is also missing here is throwing in some imperfections, of course if that's what you're going for, more realistic. I'd just throw in some noise textures for roughness, and scratches for the bump/normal.

If your condom looks like this sword's blade, you are doing something wrong.
But yea, I get what you are trying to say. Anyway, I just want to explore Blender right now and if necessary I pick tutorials for what I need. I don't want to create another donut right now. I want to go more like the "learning by doing" way.
Just looked up how to set up a better smoothing and found out about Auto Smooth by the way. It really looks better now.

>>777706
Of course. Skill comes with practice.

>>777732
Yea, I thought about that too, but I didn't want it to be crooked or something like that, like any disproportional features or anything like that. I wanted it to look like freshly "out of the forge". But noise texture is a very good idea to make it look more realistic. Thanks.

realistically depending on what style you're going for like 3 out of 10 but very good for where you're at.

It's getting better :)
But I am not happy with the handle yet. Especially the shape of the upper part, the part which is supposed to protect your hand, looks too clumsy
