It's been 3 days that I learn about Houdini and the more I learn, the more I find this software incredible. It's really the software for 3-digit IQs. The maths behind it seem crazy. Only downsides : it lacks good direct modeling and sculpting.
However, it looks like they are currently working on improving direct modeling. So, do you think they will succeed in crushing all the other softwares here too? If so, what would keep me from switching to Houdini?

Good for sims and complicated effects, not so great for everything else. Most pipelines combine it with other 3D packages.

Yourself. Seriously. You like what you see, so what's your excuse? Use Houdini for its strengths, use other software for theirs. Just don't stagnate.

I, for one, welcome SideFX's developments in direct modeling. But that's not keeping me from using Maya as a "modeling plugin" when I need it.

Rigging and character animation is fail.

What I'm digging is the procedural assets creation workflow for statics, I'm currently using Blender with modifiers for this but Houdini nodes are much more powerful.

I'd rather use as few softwares as possible since it costs money y'know.

How?

It's like they tried to copy Maya, failed because of choices like bones instead of joints and making rigs live in OBJ & CHOPS contexts, and then removed multithreading so that playback speed is no better than shitty Blender.

Won't Unity's realtime effects engine eventually supersede it? Or Blender for that matter, someday? Free shit is a juggernaut that always erodes marketshare of boutique commercial offerings.

I talked to the SideFX devs like 2 weeks ago and they said procedural rigging is otw very soon.

Yea they have been staffing up on rigging and animation developers.

I've heard rumors. But when, for 18.5? It sounds like those improvements would be more fitting of a major update. So... one year from now, perhaps a couple months less?

What is "procedural rigging?" I want a /rig/ context with parallel evaluation and GPU deformers.

It already has ;-)

Luckily I've seen the sign early on and began to take courses a few years ago. Now I'm ready for the future, while everybody else plays catch on.

You are definitely ready. For what I can't really tell right now.

Got several good recommendations from my teachers for animation, modeling, rendering and artistic vision.
I'd prefer to become an artistic director, but I guess I can't avoid entry level positions. So I'm applying as a general Houdini creator/artist.

Houdini triple digit IQ heavyweights like you should aim straight for the position of technical director.

can this pic become a meme

It can't, because it's not truly done in Houdini, but in Blender. And because of that, it's just another average Blender work.
