''Le Blender is bad meme''

It's not a meme, it's truth. Blendlets feel insecure because nobody takes their donut software seriously. Hate autodesk this much& Hell use Modo or Houdini. No reason to use Anvil Forge at all. The software being free isn't an argument. Home users can pirate the software, studios can afford the license fees.

Blender will only discredit you as an artist.

What differs from the other boards is the fact that most /3/ users don't understand jokes and banter. They take all jokes seriously, and consider them at best an attempt to troll. This is very weird all on itself and probably means something, though I'd be lying if I said I knew what.

/tv/ is made almost entirely of playful bant. You can joke on /a/ or /tg/ or /ck/ or even /po/ (origami). But this boards seems unable to realize that someone is joking. I have seen that pattern repeated a dozen times those past six months: someone tells an obvious /3/ related joke, and then the people of this board are just confused.

Some respond angrily. Some takes the joke as a serious statement and respond seriously. Some other are just... stopping. They don't understand. The statement proffered didn't make internal consistency or sense, so they kind of... stop.

There something awfully wrong about the people of this board.

>> No.646797

>>646792
Well, /3/'s one of the least 4chan 4chan boards. The only semblance of "board culture" we have nowadays just comes from our generals, something other boards tend to look down on. In those generals all that ever happens is just proper and civil discussion.
>how's it look
>not good here's what you should change
>thanks anon i'll work harder next time
if not
>hey how do i do this
>just like that
>oh thanks
When such a mentality like that is present so prominently, it's only natural that attempts at shitposting get taken seriously. Because the current core culture of our board is to take things seriously. Simply put: this is a no-fun zone. Not because anyone said so, it just _is_.
>Some other are just... stopping.
Because we're tired of it. What else? When you're here long enough, it's the same shit every single (more like other) day. You can't really play along, if not another anon will come in and give that angry/serious response. So you just let it run its course. Watch the occasional anon fall for it, then just let it bump into obscurity.
>inb4 you fell for one!
Like I said, all that ever happens is proper civil discussion. This just looks like any other post I see on this humdrum board. Jokes on me, I guess.

the troll and banter just sucks to be honest. and don't think of me as a sensitive person or anything. the trolling here has gotten so stale and old that its just annoying.

the whole blender thing was funny for a while, then "they" squeezed the lemon even more by attacking blender people like gleb, andrew and tosh. and that's done they moved to attacking users that use blender.
so yeah, that's pretty much the banter here. if you want to try something hip and fresh, go for it.

I hated getting to the end of the tutorials and realising that there wasn't really any structure to what he taught; you're just following his steps and not really learning anything or gaining a deeper understanding. I don't think anyone comes here for jokes and banter. We want to discuss all manner of 3D modelling, not bawl at eachother about our feelings. The closest we get to it is some people shrieking about software they don't like, but not giving well intentioned informative responses and devolving into what is essentially bickering.

Even the donut thread was full of reasoned good faith discussion. People learned from criticism in that thread, and they came away better for it. Some of the donuts were good, some of them were not so good. At the end of the day, we should be coming here to learn and share, not point and laugh. And that isn't a reddit opinion, because the idiots who post dumb frogs or feels or muh I am the only conscious human npc meme are the same people. The same people who don't actually care about the subject matter of the board they visit, they just want to shit all over it, because it's "fun".

>>646802
>you're just following his steps and not really learning anything
I get exactly what you mean. Some people like that sort of learning process, though. Not me, personally, but my brother liked to follow similar "guides", and experiment along the way. I can kind of get it, but at the end of the day, you know what you want to make, and it's probably not a donut, so you might as well cut out the middle man and just play with the soft and try to make what you feel like making, looking up how to do things as you feel the desire to do things more efficiently. imo, that's more realistic, because whether you're self employed or work for someone, you're not always going to have Donut Man around to give exact instructions on how to make whatever.

honestly i thought it was good because of what you learn, obviously he picked the anvil because the shape is interesting to work and require a lot of problem solving for a noob like me

idk how it look in the end, im before the texture part, but anyway.. having an anvil is always nice and makes you want to expand on that theme making swords and shit and he probably had that in mind too. Same for the donut and mug suggesting you continue to fill the table with stuff.

Pretty smart actually, also the actual techniques are why you watch a tut, not the end result.

my problem with these type of tutorials that they are multi-disciplinary. you just rush through all the basics instead of learning them one by one.

you would rather make a very good model OR a very good render OR a very good animation. all of those will be equally impressive, but again- you don't learn anything by rushing through blender. i don't see the point in making anything if the result isn't good

It's all super easy

>array of arays of a planes with a glossy black materioal, a light voronoi texture in displacement to make them wavy and non-perfect
>array of arrays of cyllinders with a glowing material + math node with camera distance in color (camera distance -> math -> color)
>randon boxes and cylinders stretched into long sticks outside of the tunnel to catch light and make lines
>global volumetric scattering trying to make the light more hazy and add flares (not very succesfully)
>some post effects in compositor trying to get flares and a lens reflection (not very succesfully)

The .blend file is lost, but there's nothing hard.
it's literally just planes and glowing cylinders with array modifier and a math node for color.

Shift+D to duplicate that selection. That should bring you back to the point you want to be in the tutorial of creating the frosting.

As an append to this: pretty much everything dielectric has some degree of SSS in it. Plastic, paper, milk, cloth, ceramics, even wood. It's obviously very hard to notice on the harder objects, but they're still there. Anyone who says SSS is a meme is probably some NPR nerd.
I find the documentation for SSS in Arnold to be pretty goddamn good for understanding how to work SSS:

The principles and technology are more or less the same, so transferring the knowledge cross-renderer is pretty simple.

No one cares about this shit. Do something original, stick a fucking dick in the doughnut. Make a sword or hammer to go with the anvil. These tutorials are for going over the basics, use those fucking basics and go further than the tutorial. No one cares that you're able to follow instructions step by step off a video. Give people something to actually critique. Once again, it's not YOUR doughnut or anvil, just like the paintings you "make" at the wine and painting things aren't really your work.

I'm not saying make a masterpiece, just fucking make something else with the scene to say, "Hey, I've actually learned something".
Then people can get a fucking benchmark on their skills and say where they can improve, beginner or not. Because following a video step by step doesn't mean you actually learned shit. It just means you can replicate the steps.

It's pretty big in the area I live. You get a bunch of people that age or girls in their 20s or something going to it as a way to pretend they're arty. So mainly college girls and middle aged housewives (and their husbands they drag along). If you're in the market for getting laid, I guess it's pretty decent, but so is going to a dance studio or spin class.

I get what it's for, and it's not really about the art, just a group activity to mingle and paint and drink a bunch of wine. Which is totally fine except when they go spouting on social media like they did something incredible, and people stroke their ego even more. It's just the only example that matched.
At least when you're following a Bob Ross video he tells you to follow your own path and make it your own. The paint and sip, and the doughnuts are just reproducing steps. I get it, it's their first foray into the program so they're not going to make anything of quality. But following the tutorial you're not making your own doughnut, you're making Andrew's doughnut. When someone goes out and makes something on their own, they'll probably get discouraged because it doesn't look as good as their first doughnut render turned out and they won't understand why.
The point I'm making from all this rambling is just make it a fucking chocolate doughnut, or make it blue icing, put orange juice in the cup, do SOMETHING to make it your own. Doing something different isn't going to fundamentally break the tutorial.

Given that this thread is for posting your "first model/first render", I never made the doughnut tutorial, I found it way too long for the most basic shit, it helps if you never touched 3d software before but it's way too drawn out to do anything.
He spends roughly 1-2 hours to teach someone how to split half of the torus + apply solidify to it & scale it up a bit, which is excessive.
I can teach someone how to make props that are on-par with Blizzard's environment design props and other basic shit in less than an hour.
I learned by example and by watching a lot of speed modelling videos and by studying others' topology.

If you want to get into the industry today, I suggest learning to sculpt (pref ZBrush), a general modelling tool (Blender, Maya, Max), procedural texturing tool (Mari or Substance Painter) though you can sculpt and texture as well in blender if you're up for that.

lol you mean subdivision? its a workflow that is based around modelling with a low poly cage and the subdivision being the high poly. You dont have to worry about triangles or n gons wit the low poly since it will be converted to quads in the high poly.

Trying to sound smart? If you knew anything about topology you would know most of those triangles and n gons mostly come from fragmented loops that dont need to extend further than they need to. If you modeled a head you dont need to bring all the loops all the way to the back of the head, instead you can just leave n gons in the middle and that will just get subdivided into quads same goes for fingers and toes, but you wouldnt know that.

no retard. All triangles will turn into smaller quads, yes. The model you posted has tons of triangles in its base mesh around super sensitive areas like the lips. Those triangles are going to distrort the lips in most other poses. Its going to be overly complicated to get good looking mouth animations if you want that model to do anything other than stay static in the pose you posted.

The artist of that model is most likely in the stage where they havent animated enough models to know this yet.

It all comes down to a free tutorial by Andrew Price, an amateur who goes by the name "BlenderGuru" on YouTube, and who made an introductory tutorial to modeling, shading, lighting and rendering a donut scene on Blender. People do it because it's easy, Blender is free, and it gives them the impression that they know how to model in 3D, despite not having learned anything of substance beyond how to push a few buttons in one particular application and for one particular result.

It's a training wheels course to get used to Blender. It's fine as it is but butthurt "muh industry autodesk" slurpers like think it's the worst thing in the world. People like you are hilarious and sad because no one gives a shit in the real world as long as it gets the job done.

Because people follow a tutorial, get chuffed with themselves that they followed the instructions like a good little boy, and then proceed to post here expecting people to stroke their ego, and welcome them with open arms.

The tutorial is probably fine, and a good way to pick up the basics, but the mentality from people thinking they did some insurmountable achievement and are entitled to praise from it is what annoys people.
It's like expecting to be praised because they followed the instructions on the box to cook a Hot Pocket. They're nowhere near being a chef, they just know how to use a microwave. Then again, most places that's all they do nowadays.

>noob here, why there is so much hate toward this video?
Ultimately, you need to understand that most 3d artists are deeply resentful and weak people, who deep down are convinced that what they do is both the most trivial, unimportant thing imaginable, and a heroic deed each day made anew.

It is a classical example of the old Russian resentment/weakness-driven personality. The more they feel pathetic, the more they boost themselves by trying to appear strong or knowledgeable. They twist their only quality into a fault. It is the most banal thing.

Concerning this tutorial, it is specifically aimed at demystifying 3D to the populace, and the result is perfectly serviceable. This is doubly wrong. Oh god, how can they not think that what I do is important? How can they do something good just by following Youtube? God, wouldn't that mean that I have no worth? That what I do is unnecessary?

And yet, I know it is unnecessary. I am but the most mediocre person on earth. But They must not know - not the plebeians, they are lesser than me (even though I am lesser than anyone), because if I don't have that I have NOTHING.

The most banal thing on earth, really.
