Is VR still a thing in the industry or has it already been left for dead?

>> No.642522

>>642514
Not dead, it's currently an expensive niche meme.

>> No.642526

I hope consumer VR dies silently...like in the 90s....only to haunt us again in 20 years.

You better be making porn with VR

Oculus are announcing their stand alone headset next week, so it hasn't really started yet desu

>> No.642538

VR won't work until you can completely control every single little thing. It's basically just a FPS with more camera control right now.

>> No.642562

>>642514
It was a fad, it's still too expensive for what you can get at the moment.

Current issues vr needs to solve are
-comfort
-price
-space required
-control

It's good for porn but the market is too niche to go much further

>> No.642591

I feel like the people that says VR is a meme or a fad, don't actually own a VR headset or hasn't even tried it at all. VR is fucking awesome.

I've owned a Vive for a little over a year, and still use it at least a few times a week.

Pimax is shipping out their 8K and 5K headset, which are pretty much Gen 2 VR compared to the Oculus and Vive.

I don't want to look like Ray Charles on the piano while playing games.

>>642591
I had a VR headset in the 90s. Like already said here, consumer VR was garbage and still feels like it. I also worked with systems from Siemens and Bombardier and these industrial systems are YEARS ahead,,,they also cost like $30k.

It's not dead but it's dying. It's just too soon for the tech, come back in 20 years.

>come back in 20 years
More like 200 years.

Let's be real. In order to get a somewhat inclusive experience, porting graphics to a headset is the least problem. You need to be suspended in the air/fixed in one spot, while still being able to move and do walking motions. You need to have physical feedback at least on hands & feet to make interaction somewhat believable. I'd say the biggest problem is horizontal movement. VR games right now are all just 'beam me from point to point so I can look around and steer wobbly hand substitutes in space'.

Wtf is this "review?" I've never heard of this product before, the guy is practically jizzing all over the camera and the first twenty comments are by other "review" channels giving him praise for doing such a "great job." I'm instantly turned off of this product.

He's right, when it comes to games. Doom will never be playable in VR without having to jump around the map or without motion sickness. Not until you have an entire room you can walk around in with conveyor belt floors and pop-up walls.

VR would be good for general computer usage though - like web browsing or coding - but they need to improve the resolution and not make them not so eye-hurty.

I can use vr all day and my eyes won’t hurt. The res is fine, but there’s a major upgrade coming out soon in the form of pimax. Motion sickness can be overcome with good habits (I got over it within a week) and people like Palmer Luckey are trying to come up with some weird shit that solves the inner ear issue. Most vr games coming out now have artificial movement with the option of teleport, there are almost no tele only games coming out.

You are a huge outlier then. The typical experienced VR user can take a session of ~1 hour before becoming uncomfortable.

To add to the conversation here I bought the oculus dk2 back before release and experimented a bit. I did get some crazy discomfort when using key movement to go any direction but forward at too high of a speed. Really made me feel like I was being whipped around, maybe this goes away after awhile, there really werent many demos available back then so I resold it once I was done dicking around and realized my specs weren't good enough.

The oculus then used triangle space projected from a camera to track your position with two sensors similar to the way a wiimote works, the vive with its two bases and bunch of lasers seemed like a much better idea, but I havent had a chance to try one yet.

im waiting for the overlord anime like vr some day some year

it's on the way.

auto 3d anon here. the big 3 are investing huge into vr, they want to be able to model in vr and have their designers preview the models in 3d before anything is fabricated, as well as experience interiors in vr as they are being designed.

in combination with the upcoming vr OS that google is developing, i'd say its still probably 2 years out before we see anything serious, but it's definitely coming and wont be wasted time if you wanted to sharpen up on utilizing 3d for VR.

also it should be said, unreal engine plays really well with VR, its practically plug and play, very little additional hoops to jump through to get it to work, at least on a basic level, and theres enough tuts on youtube on it that you can get some basic unreal VR levels working in no time, even with no experience specifically in VR

It's very niche, but as a developer/artist it's the best time to join since the thing hasn't boomed yet,so you can gain experience instead of joining late as a slave. Kinda like programming 20 years ago vs programming today or app development in 2006 vs today.

I spend like 5 hours in VR(chat) a day, and use stick movement and smooth turning without issue. And there are plenty of people who are in VR even longer than me. I used to get slightly motion-sick from flying vehicles, but they don't phase me anymore.

There's reporting bias of course, since I only talk to the people who are in VRChat with me, but I don't think it's as much of an outlier as you think.

That bald pedo is always like that though.
"overenthusiastic" you can say.

And chink shilling is in full force right now too actually.
People got tired of getting fucked in the ass by HTC and oculus, so they jump on the first half-assed non-htc lighthouse HMD with open arms.

State of the industry is pretty sad right now.

I bought a ps4 vr set. It was kinda cool, not a game changer, though.

Y'all are fucking dumb if you think gayming was the use and not just a way to get money while enterprises try find a use for it
