We learn 3ds in my uni. I'm entering my final year soon and they just switched to maya for new students.

Wish I learned maya but oh well. I want to do environnement texture anyway.

Any of those softwares can do all the cool stuff, provide you have the plugins.
That said, i only work on MAX, and suffered a lot to learn Zbrush to finally get rid of the retopology and autoUVW steps that took almost a week per character.
