What's the best way to open a 20-year old .max file while keeping everything intact?

with maya or max you should be able to adjust import settings to an older date or just you know look up a youtube video

Max has a special feature where it hasn't changed or received major improvements in the last 20 years, thus ensuring perfect file compatibility with older versions. Import away, friendo.

Not really 100% possible, because 3ds is retarded when it comes to backward compatibility.

20 years, so we're talking R2 or R2.5 here. I still have this one installed on my ancient workstation.

I've been trying to track down a copy of 2.0

Sry, I only got 2.5 with tons of commercial plugins...pretty much all the shit I used back then.

If you have all the shit to still install it, you should upload it on Mega or something.
Old programs get harder to find every year, and someday they'll be gone forever.

Unfortunately it's useless without the corresponding hardware dongles. Can't share these easily.

You might want to look for cracked versions, vetusware.com has some stuff.

Basically the best way to do this is figure out a chain for bouncing the files up to newer versions, by finding out the oldest file version that is supported by the program, and then download that version, find out its oldest version, and so on till you get back far enough.
Mesh data is always mesh data and you'll be able to preserve at least that much, but if there are modifiers and shaders and such applied, then you'll have to check to see whether they are still available on newer versions, although there is a lot of legacy support in Max.
This means that every time you bounce the file up to a newer version, make sure nothing broke along the way, and if it did, try to update or replace the way it was set up with a newer variant. If the original files used plugins of any kind, then you might have a problem depending on its nature. If it was a rendering plugin, you can attempt to rebuild the shaders anew in your renderer of choice. If it was a more specific plugin, like for particle simulation and it was stopped being developed a long time ago, then you might be stuck with the latest version that plugin used to support.

Those versions of Max are late 90's, so 20 years or so.

3D Studio R4 DOS: April 1994
3D Studio Max 1.0: May 1996
3D Studio Max R2: July 1997
3D Studio Max R3: early 1999

I bought all 3D Studio releases up to version 9....plus 15 grand spent on plugins.

This.

Also id say compatibility is quite good, with latest 3dsmax I imported some of the half-life SDK sources fine which are just about 20 years old now. Some of these even had biped rigs that worked fine.

i have to ask though, how important could that file possibly be for you to want to use it 20 years later?
Just for nostalgia sake looking at it?
