Hello fellas. I'm a skilled 2d artist, and I'm trying to get into making games. Naturally these will be comfy cute games with an emphasis on art, mood and storytelling. Nothing super bombastic.

So I need to get into very simple basic 3d, but have been struggling even with that. I've tried blender and didn't get too far. I will be posting samples of what it is that I'm trying to achieve itt.

My question is: What software would you recommend I go for? I'll keep grinding XP on blender if you can assure me it'll be worth it. Sprytile, a blender plugin, looks amazing and seems perfect for what I want to do, so I'm thinking blender is probably worth it, right?

Alright, in come the samples

you can easily achieve this in blender

what you need to do is learn all the basic hardsurface techniques (extrude, move, merge, create edge, knife, cutloop, slide)
there are lots of tutorials online that let you create decent lowpoly from primitive shapes, just keep modeling and be patient.
you don't need any modeling plugins for blender, i do hardsurface in blender for years and i never had to download hardops or any kind of modeling addon

go through these things too

>shadeless materials OR custom toon shaders
>texturing
>UV unwrapping
>unity (the basics, importing and exporting, viewport)

good luck friend, ill put a few tutorials here just in case

yes. start with the simple styles then slowly move on to texturing.

the 8-bit stuff you posted is considered "high difficulty". so i suggest you also download asperite and krita too. those require good unwrapping & texturing skills

gonna get a dog soon to salvage a bit of my old life.

It's already pretty bad but I got a yoga mat and a skipping rope so I try to get in 30-60 minutes of those in per day. What suffered most is my eyesight, it's gone down the shitter pretty dramatically.

Doggo will fix everything. Will also force me to get fresh air 2-3 times per day and fix my sleeping schedule. Can't wait.

>Doggo will fix everything.

Please do not get a dog as a means to an end. Training a dog is a lot of work. They are very social animals that require lots of attention and also regular contact with other dogs, or they will become dull and unhappy. They can also be quite expensive especially when they get old or get injured, and they will be around for a long period of your life. It's a long term comittmend and should not be taken lightly. If you work 16 hours a day that doesn't sound healthy but it also doesn't sound like a dog fits in there. What are you gonna do when you find a job in the industry that requires you to move or work in an office 8h a day where you can't bring the dog?

If you want to exercise or go outside more, you can do that without a dog. It's a decision you have to make for yourself, please don't burden an innocent animal with that.

If you have thought about it for a long time and gone through the financial side of things, and if you're ready to take care of a dog 3-5 hours a day for 10+ years, they are awesome companions. I'm lying next to mine right now. There's nothing more calming and refreshing than taking your dog for a long walk after 3dsmax has crashed for the 50th time or when you're stuck on a problem.
But please don't make this life changing decision lightly, because it's gonna affect the dogs life much more than yours.

>> No.596566

>>596563
Also, when you have a dog you WILL have to clean up shit (sometimes liquid), piss and vomit. You will have to cook rice and chicken to help calm his stomach after he has eaten god knows what. You will have to pry rotten god knows what from his mouth. A large part of human-dog relationship consists of chasing each other trying to figure out wtf the other part is eating. Your dog will at one point literally eat shit, and also roll around in it. You will carry around a plastic bag full of dogshit for miles because there are no trashcans anywhere. You will meet lots of people who shouldn't own a dog, but also lots of nice people you wouldnt have ever met otherwise. And one day it will end and it will break your heart.

So I've been learning to do low poly models, and it's quite fun. I get stuck a lot and I'm fighting the interface all the time but eventually I figure things out and I can get into an efficient workflow. Done some barrels, mushrooms, and funky low poly plants.

Then I stumbled across a program called Magica Voxel. Looks pretty amazing! I was wondering if you guys know of any methods to retexture models made in it? Because if it's possible and not too hard to do, I have myself a game changer (especially when it comes to buildings and bridges and all the non-natural stuff.

>>596563

>So I've been learning to do low poly models, and it's quite fun. I get stuck a lot and I'm fighting the interface all the time
This is a result of a lack of core knowledge and trying to do things before you're ready.

>I was wondering if you guys know of any methods to retexture models made in it?
Again, a lack of basic knowledge. That program, like every 3d program, can export models as some sort of quasi-universal format like .OBJ or Alembic or .dae or some intermediary format that someone's written a script or add-on to convert to more general (like for the various files generated by Source Film Maker). You then engage in a process called "retoplogizing" to fix the errors in the geometry caused by the import/export process and/or to achieve whatever results are important to you in terms of animation needs or subdiv.

By the way, low poly models are some of the hardest models you can make. That's because they're extremely optimized in terms of how they're constructed, and all the detail comes from the textures. Which generally means hand painting the textures, which generally means you pretty much need a decent background in painting to understand how to paint the model to simulate lighting and surface details that you would normally model or create with lamps in a conventional high poly model.
Since you've got that 2d background, hand painted low poly is what you want, but understand that it means you need to understand a certain amount of 3D as well as a certain amount of 2D.

By the way, understand also that in deciding to learn 3D, you've decided to learn an entirely new artform. It's not like saying "I like water colors and I like sketching, now I think I'll learn to stipple." it's more like saying "I like sketching furniture, I think I'll learn how to make furniture."
In a way it's sort of insulting, but having been a beginner myself, I know that it just comes from a place of hopeful optimism and ignorance of the big picture.

What would you say is core knowledge to solidify before attempting such things? I'm passing by and have taken an interest in 3d modeling next to my programming and art skills. Your comment has made me very curious as I was about to just download Blender and start modeling random things (especially humans, eventually. Getting there with the anatomical knowledge.)

>> No.596663

My bad, but to clarify, my interest in 3d modeling is from a purely hobbyist perspective. I'd love to be able to make my own 3d models (anime style), and make animated porn loops. The demand for lewds out there is big. And perhaps eventually a small cuteish game in Unity.

So I guess modeling humanoids is my end goal, or is that not a good way to think about 3d modeling?

not him but from my experience humans and organic models are best done in Zbrush. which is a very complex program to get into, the ui is unlike anything you've seen before and will frustrate you quite a bit. but it's incredibly powerful once you figure it out.

>> No.596673

I've watched a lot of Zbrush videos and it does look intimidating, but also incredible what some people pull off in it. I guess the general idea is to make the model in Zbrush, then have another app make a low-poly mesh of it to texture/rig and animate for any other purpose?

I recently watched this, which looked really interesting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhkmwB10-WM (p1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpqQIkthFoM (p2)

I guess I'm really, really interested and should just start somewhere. Perhaps picking some references and trying to replicate them in Zbrush to get a bit of a grasp of it. The results might be shit, but its a start.
